The company operates its business through two segments: electric and telecommunications.

AP&T's electric segment is engaged in the retail and wholesale of electricity, through its hydroelectric and diesel generation facilities in rural portions of Alaska.

Alaska Power Company (APC) is an electric utilities subsidiary of the company in Alaska, which is engaged in building hydroelectric facilities, retrofitting diesel systems with remote controls, and extending power lines. BBL Hydro, a subsidiary of the company, operating the Black Bear lake hydro project, a 4.5-megawatt storage project located on Prince of Wales Island, which is located at 15 miles northeast of Klawock.

The company's power projects include: Upper Lynn canal power supply system; Goat Lake hydro, a four-megawatt hydroelectric facility located seven miles north of Skagway; Dewey Lakes hydro, a 943-kilowatt hydro project located adjacent to downtown Skagway; Kasidaya Creek hydro, a three-megawatt run-of-river project located three miles south of Skagway; South Fork hydro, a two-megawatt, run-of-river, hydroelectric project; Connelly Lake hydro, located up the Chilkoot River approximately 12 miles southwest of Skagway and 15 miles northeast of Haines; and Lutak hydro, which operates in a run-of-river mode and provides seasonal energy to the Upper Lynn Canal Power Supply System.

AP&T's telecommunications segment provides local telephone service to several communities of Alaska. The company's telecommunication subsidiaries include Alaska Telephone Company, which is a local exchange carrier; AP&T Long Distance, a provider of residential and business discounted long distance services; Bettles Telephone that serves approximately 177 access lines of the northern communities of Bettles, Jim River Camp and Allakaket; and North Country Telephone, which offers dial-up internet access services and serves approximately 200 access lines. The company also provides broadband internet access services in the rural areas of Alaska from Southeast Alaska to the Arctic Circle.
