CMS Energy Corporation (CMS Energy or 'the company') is an integrated energy company operating through its subsidiaries primarily in the Michigan region of the US. It is the holding company of Consumers Energy, an electric and gas utility, and CMS Enterprises, primarily a domestic independent power producer.

CMS Energy operates through four business segments: electric utility; gas utility; enterprises; and other reconciling items.

The electric utility business segment include the generation, purchase, distribution, and sale of electricity. In FY2014, Consumers Energy served 1.8 million electric customers in Michigan's Lower Peninsula region.

Moreover, Consumers Energy's electricity distribution system includes 434 miles of high-voltage distribution radial lines operating at 120 kilovolts (kV) or above; and 4,261 miles of high-voltage distribution overhead lines operating at 23 kV, 46 kV, and 69 kV. Its electricity distribution system also includes 18 miles of high-voltage distribution underground lines operating at 23 kV and 46 kV, 56,022 miles of electric distribution overhead lines, 10,304 miles of underground distribution lines, and substations having an aggregate transformer capacity of 24 million kilovolt amperes (kVA).

The company's network is interconnected to Michigan Electric Transmission Company (METC), a company that owns an interstate high-voltage electric transmission system in Michigan and interconnected with neighboring utilities as well as other transmission systems. Consumers Energy generates power from 12 coal-fired and six oil/gas steam-fired generating plants, 41 hydroelectric plants, and 13 combustion-turbine plants that produce electricity when needed during peak demand periods. In FY2014, the total generation capacity totaled 8,776 MW, including the purchased capacity of 2,863 MW. Also, the total owned generation totaled 18,144 gigawatt hours (GWh) in FY2014.

The gas utility business segment also operates through Consumers Energy and include the purchase, transmission, storage, distribution, and sale of natural gas. It had 1.7 million gas customers in Michigan's Lower Peninsula region in FY2014.

Consumers Energy's gas distribution and transmission system is located throughout Michigan's Lower Peninsula and consists of 27,169 miles of distribution mains, 1,685 miles of transmission lines, and seven compressor stations with a total of 168,721 installed horsepower. It also consists of 15 gas storage fields with an aggregate storage capacity of 309 billion cubic feet (bcf) and a working storage capacity of 151 bcf.

The enterprises business segment operates through CMS Enterprises. CMS Enterprises, through various subsidiaries and certain equity investments, is engaged primarily in domestic independent power production and the marketing of independent power production. As of FY2014, the company had ownership interests in independent power plants totaling 1,135 gross megawatts (MW).

The company also has an ownership interest in seven generating plants located in Michigan and North Carolina. These include the Dearborn, Gaylord, Comstock, Filer City, Flint, Grayling, in Michigan, and New Bern in North Carolina.

CMS Energy's generating facilities are supported by CMS Energy Resource Management (CMS ERM), a subsidiary of CMS Energy engaged in purchase and sale of energy commodities. In FY2014, CMS ERM marketed approximately 19 bcf of natural gas and 4,681 GWh of electricity.

The other reconciling items segment includes EnerBank, corporate interest and other expenses, and discontinued operations. EnerBank is a Utah state-chartered, FDIC-insured industrial bank providing unsecured consumer installment loans for financing home improvements.
