Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association (Tri-State) is an electricity cooperative involved in the generation and transmission of power to its member systems throughout a 200,000 square-mile service territory across Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico and Wyoming. The company provides electric power to the Members through a combination of generating facilities that Tri-State own, lease, have undivided percentage interests in, or have tolling arrangements. These generating facilities provide with maximum available power of 2,841 megawatts (MWs), including 1,874 MWs from coal fired base load facilities and 967 MWs from gas and oil fired facilities.
Tri-State’s various coal fired electric generating facilities include Craig Generating Station, Nucla Generating Station, Escalante Generating Station, Laramie River Generating Station, San Juan Generating Station Unit 3 and Springerville Generating Station Unit 3.
Craig Station is a three unit, 1,303 MW coal fired electric generating facility located near Craig, Colorado. Nucla Generating Station is a 100 MW coal fired electric generating facility located near Nucla, Colorado. Laramie River Generating Station is a three-unit, 1,710 MW coal fired electric generating facility located near Wheatland, Wyoming and operated by Basin. Escalante Station is a 253 MW coal fired electric generating facility located near Prewitt, New Mexico. San Juan Generating Station is a four unit, 1,600 MW, coal fired electric generating facility located in the Four Corners area of New Mexico. Springerville Unit 3, located in east central Arizona, is a 416 MW unit that is part of a four unit coal fired, 1,578 MW electric generating facility operated by TEP.
The company's gas and oil fired electric generation facilities include Brush Generation Station, Knutson Generating Station, Limon Generating Station, Pyramid Generating Station, J M Shafer Generating Station and Rifle Generating Station.
Burlington Generating Station consists of two 50 MW simple cycle combustion turbines that operate on fuel oil and is located in Burlington, Colorado. Knutson Generating Station consists of two 70 MW simple-cycle combustion turbines that can operate on either natural gas or fuel oil and is located near Brighton Colorado. Limon Generating Station consists of two 70 MW simple-cycle combustion turbines that can operate on either natural gas or fuel oil and is located near Limon, Colorado. Pyramid Generating Station consists of four 40 MW simple-cycle combustion turbines that can operate on either natural gas or fuel oil and is located near Lordsburg, New Mexico. Rifle Generating Station is an 85 MW, natural gas fired combined generating facility located near Rifle, Colorado. J.M. Shafer Generating Station is a combined cycle, 272 MW, natural gas fired generating facility located near Fort Lupton, Colorado, which is primarily operated to provide intermediate load generating capacity.
The company has contracts with Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) and Basin Electric Power Cooperative (Basin) for hydroelectric power purchases.
Tri-State's subsidiaries include Axial Basin Coal Company, Taylor Creek Holding Company, Colowyo Coal Company L.P., Springerville Unit 3 Partnership LP, Springerville Unit 3 OP LLC, Springerville Unit 3 Holding LLC, and JMSGEN IGP, LLC.
