TransCanada PipeLines (TCPL) is a natural gas transmission, natural gas storage, power generation and an oil transmission company in North America. TCPL is a wholly owned subsidiary of TransCanada Corporation.

The company operates its business through five segments: Canadian Natural Gas Pipelines, U.S. Natural Gas Pipelines, Mexico Natural Gas Pipelines, Liquids Pipelines and Energy.

The natural gas pipelines segment transports natural gas to local distribution companies, power generation facilities and other businesses across Canada, the US and Mexico. The Canadian Natural Gas Pipelines segment operates the following natural gas pipelines: NGTL System, Canadian Mainline, Coastal GasLink, and Merrick Mainline. In FY2016, the Canadian Natural Gas Pipelines segment reported revenues of CAD3,682.0 million, which accounted for 29.4% of the company's total revenue.

The U.S. Natural Gas Pipelines segment operates the following natural gas pipelines: Leach XPress, Rayne XPress, Mountaineer XPress, Cameron Access Project, and Midstream – Gibraltar Pipeline Projects. In FY2016, the U.S. Natural Gas Pipelines segment reported revenues of CAD2,526.0 million, which accounted for 20.2% of the company's total revenue.

The Mexico Natural Gas Pipelines segment operates the following natural gas pipelines: Topolobampo, Villa de Reyes Pipeline, and Tamazunchale Pipeline Extension Project. In FY2016, the Mexico Natural Gas Pipelines segment reported revenues of CAD378.0 million, which accounted for 3.0% of the company's total revenue.

TCPL's Liquids Pipelines segment through its infrastructure division connects Alberta and U.S. crude oil supplies to the US refining markets in Illinois, Oklahoma and Texas, as well as connecting the US crude oil supplies from the Cushing, Oklahoma hub to refining markets in the US Gulf Coast. The segment operates the following liquids pipelines and properties: Keystone Pipeline System and Cushing Marketlink. Its other pipelines include Houston Lateral and Houston Terminal, Keystone Hardisty Termina and Northern Courier Pipeline; and developed pipelines consist of Keystone XL, Energy East Pipeline and Upland Pipeline. In FY2016, the Liquids Pipelines segment reported revenues of CAD1,755.0 million, which accounted for 14.0% of the company's total revenue.

The company's Energy segment includes a portfolio of power generation assets in Canada and the U.S., and unregulated natural gas storage assets in Alberta. It owns, controls and develops generation capacity powered by natural gas, nuclear, coal, hydro, wind and solar asset. The power business in Canada is located in Alberta, Ontario and Quebec; and in the U.S. it is located in New York, New England, and Arizona. The company conducts wholesale and retail electricity marketing and trading throughout North America from its offices in Alberta, Ontario and Massachusetts. It also owns and controls unregulated natural gas storage capacity in Alberta and regulated natural gas storage in Michigan. In FY2016, the Energy segment reported revenues of CAD4,164.0 million, which accounted for 33.3% of the company's total revenue.

Geographically, the company classifies its operations into four segments, namely Canada – domestic, Canada – export, United States, Mexico. In FY2016, Canada – domestic segment accounted for 29.2% of the company's total revenues, followed by Canada – export with 9.4%; United States with 58.3%; and Mexico with 3.0%.
