Tokai's carbon black segment is engaged in the manufacturing of carbon black that is used as a reinforcing agent of industrial rubber products, typically auto tires. Its other uses include electro conductive filler and coloring agent for printing inks, paints and plastics. "In FY2016, the Carbon Black segment reported revenues of JPY37,829.0 million, which accounted for 42.7% of the company's total revenue, including adjustments". * As reported by the company.
The company's graphite electrode segment is engaged in the production of graphite electrodes that function as conductors of electricity and are consumed in electric furnace in the steelmaking process. In FY2016, the Graphite Electrodes segment reported revenues of JPY20,718.0 million, which accounted for 23.4% of the company's total revenue.
Tokai's fine carbon segment products that are applied as key parts in the manufacturing processes of electric appliances, semiconductors, solar cells and LED (light-emitting diode), among other products. In FY2016, the Fine Carbon segment reported revenues of JPY13,012.0 million, which accounted for 14.7% of the company's total revenue.
The company's industrial furnaces and related products segment is engaged in the production of industrial furnaces and heating elements, through Tokai Konetsu Kogyo Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the company, for the purposes of heating, sintering, dissolving and heat-treating objects such as ceramics, electronic parts, metals, glass and powdered materials. In FY2016, the Industrial Furnaces And Related Prodicts segment reported revenues of JPY5,508.0 million, which accounted for 6.2% of the company's total revenue.
Tokai's other Operations segment offers friction materials that are used as clutches and brakes of automobiles, motorcycles, construction, agricultural, transportation and other industrial machinery. It is also engaged in the provision of property leasing services. In FY2016, the Other Operations segment reported revenues of JPY11,932.0 million, which accounted for 13.5% of the company's total revenue.
Geographically, the company classifies its operations into four segments, namely Japan, Asia, Europe, and Other Area. In FY2016, Japan segment accounted for 49.0% of the company's total revenues, followed by Asia with 27.4%; Europe with 12.5%; and Other Area with 11.2%.
The company operates through the following manufacturing plants: Ishinomaki Plant, Shonan Plant, Chita Plant, Shiga Plant, Hofu Plant, Kyusyu Wakamatsu Plant and Tanoura Plant.
Tokai's other subsidiaries include the following: Tokai Carbon Europe, Tokai Erftcarbon, Thai Tokai Carbon Product, Tokai Carbon (Tianjin), Tokai Carbon U.S.A, Tokai Carbon (Suzhou), and Tokai Carbon Italia.
