Tohoku Electric Power Company, Incorporated (Tohoku Electric or 'the company') is an electric utility company serving 7.8 million customers throughout the Tohoku region in Japan. The company is also engaged in energy and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply, and has telecommunications, engineering, and construction operations. Tohoku Electric operates primarily in Japan.
In FY2016, Tohoku Electric operated and managed 627 substations with 75,211 million volt-amperes (MVA) capacity. Also, the company operated 15,212 kilometers of electric transmission lines and 146,550 kilometers of electric distribution lines in Japan. For FY2016, the company’s generating capacity totaled 18,812 megawatts (MW). For the same period, Tohoku Electric generated a total of 8,209 gigawatt hour (GWh) and sold a total of 75,057 GWh of electricity.
Tohoku Electric operates through two reportable business segments: electric power and construction. It also generates revenues through other segments.
The company's electric power segment engages in electric power supply business. Tohoku Electric supplies electricity to residential and industrial customers. During FY2016, the company operated 226 hydroelectric sites generating 2,538 megawatts (MW) which is followed by 13 thermal sites of 12,725 MW, (including internal combustion), 18 renewable sites of 276 MW and two nuclear sites generating 3,274 MW. In FY2016, the electric power business segment recorded revenues of JPY1,853,258 million ($15,382 million), a decrease of 4.1% as compared to FY2015.
The construction business segment consists of business related to the construction of electrical facilities, telecommunication facilities, and civil engineering and building operations. It also deals with business related to the design and manufacture of electricity supply facilities, and business related to the research, survey and analysis concerning about environment preservation. The construction business segment recorded revenues of JPY143,823 million ($1,193.7 million) in FY2016, a decrease of 1.4% as compared to FY2015.
The others business segment of Tohoku Electric includes its gas business (supply of LNG to generate power) as well as the manufacturing business. The other segment recorded revenues of JPY98,506 million ($817.6 million) in FY2016, a decrease of 5.2% as compared to FY2015. Tokyo Electric generated majority of its revenue from Japan.
The company is engaged in the supply of LNG through its subsidiary Nihonkai LNG and the information processing and telecommunication business is operated through subsidiaries Tohoku Information Systems and Tohoku Intelligent Telecommunication Company. Other subsidiaries of the company include Kitanihon Electric Cable and Tohoku Sustainable & Renewable Energy.
