Thirumalai Chemicals Limited (TCL) manufactures and sells industrial chemicals, fine chemicals and derivatives.. The company operates its business through two reportable segments namely, Chemical Products and Intermediaries; and Power generation from wind operated generators. In the Chemicals product segment, the company offers products such as phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride, malic acid, fumaric acid, and diethyl phthalate (DEP). Phthalic anhydride is used in the manufacture of plasticizers, pigments, dyes and resins such as alkyl resins used in solvent-based coatings, paints, varnishes and printing inks. Phthalic anhydride is also used in the manufacture of products such as herbicides, fire retardants, polyester polyols, insecticides, insect repellents, fire retardants, polyester polyols, rubber scorch inhibitors and others. Maleic anhydride is used in the manufacture of unsaturated polyester and alkyl resins, fumaric and malic acid, lubricating oil additives, lacquers, tartaric acid, vinyl copolymers, agricultural chemicals, surfactants and plasticizers. The company’s malic acid is the active ingredient in many sour and tart foods. It can be blended with multiple food acids, sugars, high intensity sweeteners, flavors and seasonings to create distinctive taste experiences in beverages, confectioneries, preservatives and bakery products, pharmaceutical and personal care products. Maleic acid is used in the manufacture of skin and dental care products and various technical applications including metal cleaning, textile dying and paint. It is also used in the medical products such as throat lozenges, effervescent powdered preparations, cough syrups, toothpaste, and mouthwash. It is also used in carbonated and non-carbonated beverages, ciders and wines, calcium supplements and calcium-fortified beverages, low calorie beverages, acidified dairy products, fruit preparations and preservatives, desserts, bakery products, acid-based facial products, oil field applications, gypsum cement retarders, electroplating chemicals, powdered mixes and others. Fumaric acid is used in the manufacture of medicines, cleansing agents, unsaturated polyester, drinks, food, animal feed, alkyd resins, and printing inks. It is also used in animal feed, industrial uses, cleaning agents for dentures/bath salts, tacos, breads, desserts, fruit juice drinks, wine, Confectioneries, gelatin desserts, pie fillings and others. Diethyl phthalate (DEP) is used to make plastics more flexible. It is used in manufacturing products include toothbrushes, perfumes, automobile parts, tools, cosmetics, insecticides, aspirin, food packaging, toys, plastic packaging films, toiletries, and medical treatment tubing. DEP is also used to bind cosmetics and fragrances and used in bath preparations (oils, tablets, and salts), eye shadow, toilet waters, perfumes and other fragrance preparations, hair sprays, wave sets, nail polish and enamel removers, nail extenders, bath soaps, detergents, aftershave lotions, incense sticks, and skin care preparations. DEP is used as a plasticizer in photographic, blister packaging and tape applications. In addition, it is also used as a component in insecticide sprays and mosquito repellents; as a plasticizer in solid rocket propellants; as a camphor substitute; as a wetting agent; as an ingredient in aspirin coatings; as a dye application agent for triacetate dyes; as a diluent in polysulfide dental impression materials. In FY2017, the Chemical Products and Intermediaries segment reported revenue of INR10,313.18 million, which accounted for 99.9% of the company’s total revenue. Under Power generation from wind operated generators segment, the company offers sale of wind-operated generators. This energy is then transmitted electricity board. In FY2017, this segment generated revenue of INR14.4 million, which accounted for 0.1% of the total revenue. TCL's research and development (R&D) focuses on reducing process effluents, and improving yields and conversion efficiencies. It offers research services to pharmaceutical, cosmetic and intermediates companies. The company is also involved in environmental initiatives such as wastewater management, energy management and renewable energy. In FY2017, the company spent INR27.1 million on its R&D activities, accounting for 0.3% of the total revenue. TCL has its factory located at Ranipet, Tamil Nadu, India. The company operates through its subsidiaries, agents and distributors in Europe, North America, South America, Middle East, South East Asia, Far East and Australia.
