The Tata Power Company Limited (Tata Power or 'the company') is one of India's largest integrated power companies. The major businesses of the company are in generation, transmission, distribution-cum-retail of power; coal mines and logistics; strategic engineering for defense applications; solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing; and associated project management services (engineering, procurement, construction). The company operates in India, Cyprus, Mauritius, Singapore, and Indonesia.
Tata Power operates through three business segments: Power, Coal and Others.
The Power segment is engaged in the generation, transmission and distribution electricity. As of 31st March 2016, the Tata Power Group of companies had an operational generation capacity of 9,184 megawatts (MW) based on various fuel sources including thermal (coal, gas and oil), hydroelectric power, renewable energy (wind and solar PV) and waste heat recovery serving 2.6 million customers across the country. Tata Power has spread its footprint across India and overseas. Outside Mumbai, the company has generation capacities in the states of Jharkhand, West Bengal, Gujarat, and Karnataka. During FY2016, Tata Power generated a total of 47,016 million units (MUs) of power from all its power plants and sold a total of 43,964 MUs.
The thermal power stations of the company are located at Trombay in Mumbai; Jojobera and Maithon in Jharkhand; Haldia in West Bengal; Belgaum in Karnataka; Mundra in Gujarat; and in Jamshedpur. During FY2016, the company’s total thermal power plants capacity stood at 7,436 MW. The company operates operational hydro power generating stations located in Bhira, Bhivpuri and Khopoli in Maharashtra; Dagachhu in Bhutan; and Itezhi Tezhi in Zambia with capacity totaling 693 MW. In addition, Tata Power has renewable generation assets including wind farms and solar power generation assets with installed capacities of 681 MW.
Transmission operations of Tata Power in Mumbai License is spread over the entire city of Mumbai, its suburbs and extended up to the hydro generating stations in Raigad district of Maharashtra. The company operates over 1,200 circuit kilometers (CKM) of transmission lines, connecting generating stations to 21 receiving stations. It links the thermal generation stations of Trombay, hydro generating stations in Raigad district with the network and Mumbai Distribution utilities like Tata Power Distribution, BEST, MSEDCL and Reliance Infra Tata Power Transmission in Mumbai. As part of Powerlinks Transmission Limited, the company has installed 400 kilo volts (kV) transmission lines to evacuate and transmit surplus power from eastern/north eastern region (Siliguri) to Uttar Pradesh (Mandaula) covering a distance of 1,166 km. It is the key interlink between the generation and distribution of power and links the city transmission system with Maharashtra state grid.
Its distribution business, the company has over 4,058 CKM of distribution network in Mumbai for over 650,000 consumers and over 14,364 CKM of distribution network in Delhi through the company’s subsidiary, Tata Power Delhi Distribution (TPDDL). TPDDL distributes and supplies power to the North-North West areas of Delhi. TPDDL serves over 1.5 million customers spread over in an area of 510 square kilometers (sq. km) and has a peak load of 1,050 MW. In FY2016, the company served about 664,407 customers with annual distribution sales of 5,783 MU.
In the trading business, Tata Power operates through its subsidiary, Tata Power Trading Company. Tata Power Trading provides a gamut of services, including coal supply facilitation and advisory services covering project management, techno-commercial aspects, clean development mechanism, and renewable energy certificates. In FY2016, Tata Power Trading transacted 17,309 MUs.
In FY2016, the Power segment reported revenues of INR271,820.1 million, which accounted for 74.6% of the company's total revenue.
The company's Coal segment focuses on mining and trading of coal through its subsidiary, Trust Energy Resources. Trust Energy Resources is also engaged in the shipping of coal for Tata Power's thermal power generation operations. The main business activities of the company include: ship owning, chartering and operating; investment in coal mining assets and companies; and trading in coal. The company will has a portfolio of charters and owned dry bulk carriers in its fleet for overseas transport of coal from sources such as Indonesia, Australia and South Africa. The company has 30% equity stake in PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) and 26% stake in PT Baramulti Suksessarana Tbk (BSSR) in Indonesia.
In FY2016, the Coal segment reported revenues of INR77,516.1 million, which accounted for 21.3% of the company's total revenue.
Tata Power's Others segment is engaged in designing and developing defense electronic products, and solar photovoltaic systems and its components. It is also involved in engineering, project contracts/infrastructure management services, and property development.
In FY2016, the Others segment reported revenues of INR26,103.1 million, which accounted for 7.2% of the company's total revenue.
Geographically, the company classifies its operations into two segments, namely Domestic and Overseas. In FY2016, Domestic segment accounted for 80.5% of the company's total revenues, followed by Overseas with 19.5%.
