The State Trading Corporation of India Ltd. (STC) is a premier International trading company of the Government of India engaged primarily in exports, and imports operations. It extends technical, marketing and financial assistance to exporters by arranging import of machinery and raw material for export production, setting up design centers, providing testing laboratories, taking products of small manufacturers to overseas markets by organizing their consortia, participation in exhibitions and trade fairs. It does import and export of commodities such as rice, wheat, sugar, pulses, edible oils, fertilizers, coal, bullion, etc. Its business units are classified into three groups: import of items like edible oils, pulses and fertilizers on behalf of the Govt. of India and through floating of global tender and imported quantities which are either handed over to the agency (such as FCI, Department of Fertilizers) nominated by the Govt. or sold in the domestic market through tenders. Business carried out on behalf of business associates on back-to-back basis, here the terms of trade are finalized in consultation with the business associate and STC charges a fixed trade margin in the range of 1 to 1.5%. In the third category it does direct buying and selling in items like tea, soyabean seed, chana, etc. The company export goods and commodities like wheat, rice, tea, coffee, cashew, extractions, castor oil/seed, sugar, spices, jute goods, iron ore, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, light engineering goods, construction materials, consumer goods, processed foods, textiles, garments, jewellery, leatherware, etc. The items that it imports are gold, silver, edible oils, sugar, pulses, fertilizers, metals, minerals, ores, hydro-carbons, petro-chemicals and raw materials for the Indian industry. It also imports technical and scientific equipment. The company operates under three reportable segments: Import, Export and Domestic. In FY2016, the Import Business segment reported revenue of INR 641.5 million, accounted for 82.1% of the company’s total revenue. In FY2016, the Export Business segment reported revenue of INR 79.3 million, accounted for 10.1% of the company’s total revenue. In FY2016, the Export Business segment reported revenue of INR 60.6 million, accounted for 7.8% of the company’s total revenue.
