The company offers retail advertising services to local retailers, local stores of national retailers, department and furniture stores, restaurants and other consumer-related businesses. The national advertising clients include national and major accounts such as telecommunications companies, financial institutions, movie studios, airlines and other national companies. The classified advertising offered include classified advertising, which includes remembrances, legal advertisements and other miscellaneous advertising to local auto dealers, employment, and real estate agents. The company also offers direct marketing and other services, which include preprint advertisements in direct mail, shared mail and niche publications, events and other miscellaneous advertising. In addition, McClatchy's websites offer digital classified products such as CareerBuilder.com and HomeFinder.com. The company also operates dealsaver, a proprietary daily deals service, in all of its markets.
McClatchy's audience revenues primarily comprise of print and digital subscriptions or a combination of both. The company's print newspapers are primarily delivered by large distributors and certain newspapers utilize independent contractors. McClatchy's daily newspapers provide editorial content on a variety of platforms and formats, from daily newspapers to local websites: on social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter; on smartphones and on e-readers; on websites and blogs; in niche online publications and in e-mail newsletters; through rich site summary (RSS) feeds and mobile applications.
The company's other operations include its ownership interests and investments in unconsolidated companies and joint ventures. McClatchy owns a portfolio of digital assets, including a 15% of CareerBuilder, which operates an online job website, CareerBuilder.com; and a 33.3% stake in HomeFinder, which operates the online real estate website HomeFinder.com. The company also owns 49.5% of the voting stock and 70.6% of the nonvoting stock of Seattle Times Company, which owns the Seattle Times newspaper, weekly newspapers in Puget Sound and daily newspapers located in Walla Walla and Yakima, Washington; and their related websites and mobile applications. In addition, McClatchy owns a 27% interest in Ponderay Newsprint, which owns and operates a newsprint mill in the state of Washington.
