The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas or 'the company') is one of the largest suppliers of energy in Hong Kong. It produces and distributes naphtha-based piped gas to 1.8 million customers. The company is also engaged in water supply and property development in Hong Kong. Towngas operates in Hong Kong and mainland China.

Towngas operates through four business segments: gas, water and related businesses; new energy; property; and other.

The gas, water and related businesses includes the company's mainland business and Hong Kong business.

The mainland operation of the company operates more than 220 projects in 26 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in mainland China as well as one in Thailand. The diverse joint ventures of the company include piped city-gas projects, upstream and midstream projects, water supply and wastewater treatment, natural gas filling stations, as well as new energy exploration and utilization. The company serves approximately 21 million residential, commercial, and industrial customers and had gas sales volumes of over 15.5 billion cubic meters (bcm) in FY2015.

The Hong Kong core business consists of the production and distribution of gas, its marketing and sale, the sale of gas appliances, as well as comprehensive after-sales services. This business is further divided into three sub businesses: production; network; and product development and sales. Gas is produced at two production plants in Hong Kong including Tai Po Plant and Ma Tau Kok Plant. The Tai Po Plant is located in the Tai Po Industrial Estate, covering an area of 11.71 hectares. It has a maximum supply capacity of 9.6 million standard cubic meters of gas a day. The network of the company extends to over 3,500 kilometers (km) serving more than 1.8 million customers throughout Hong Kong. During FY2015, the volume of gas sales in Hong Kong totaled 28,404 million megajoules (MJ) and the appliances sales totaled 255,730 sets.

Towngas' new energy business is controlled by ECO Environmental Investments (ECO), formerly known as ECO Energy, a subsidiary of the company. In China, ECO is focusing on the development of new energy projects that are low in emissions and pollution, covering resource exploitation, liquefaction of coalbed methane, coal-based chemicals, biomass energies, vehicular fuels, logistic hub and related facilities. In Hong Kong, ECO operates liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) filling stations, landfill gas utilization projects and a permanent aviation fuel storage facility for the Hong Kong International Airport. In Asia, ECO operates an onshore oil field project in Thailand. In collaboration with research and development institutions, ECO is actively engaged in the research and development as well as the application of new technologies for clean energy.

The company has also signed a 40-year franchise agreement with the Airport Authority Hong Kong to design, construct, and operate an aviation fuel facility supplying fuel for aircraft at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). This project consists of eight tanks with a gross aviation fuel storage capacity of 264,000 cubic meters, and a jetty with two berths, which can each accommodate vessels from 10,000 to 80,000 dead weight tonnage (dwt), whereas the 2nd loading platform can do so from 10,000 to 50,000 dwt. The aviation fuel is transported from Tuen Mun to the HKIA through two undersea pipelines.

Towngas also has ECO Environmental Energy Research Institute, a wholly-owned subsidiary of ECO, which serves as a platform for the development of advanced technology in the new energy industry and provides technical support for ECO's mainland and overseas business development. The institute is involved in a number of mainland projects in cooperation with scientific research institutions on the mainland. These projects include research into the application and development of advanced technology in the areas of coal chemicals, petroleum chemicals, environmentally-friendly new energy, and the effective use of energy.

The property business mainly deals with the leasing of land and buildings. Towngas also has an approximately 15.8% interest in the International Finance Center complex.

Towngas' other business are U-Tech Engineering Company (U-Tech), Towngas Telecommunications Company (Towngas Telecom), Hong Kong and China Water (Hua Yan Water), GH-Fusion Corporation (GH-Fusion), P-Tech Engineering Company (P-Tech), M-TECH Metering Solution Company (M-TECH), G-Tech Piping System Company (G-Tech), and S-Tech Technology Holding (S-Tech).

U-Tech provides a full range of customer services such as consultancy, construction, and maintenance in various engineering projects. Towngas Telecom provides high end telecommunication infrastructure services and quality network solutions for telecom carriers, service providers, and large corporations. Hua Yan Water manages the company's investments in the water business in mainland China. GH-Fusion is a joint venture between Towngas and The Fusion Group of the UK (Fusion), that produces polyethylene (PE) piping and fittings from more than ten production lines from the Zhongshan based manufacturing complex. H-Fusion also operates regional service centers in Jiangsu, Hubei, Shaanxi, Sichuan provinces and Northeast China.

P-Tech is a plant technical services provider which is engaged in the operation and maintenance of high pressure gas production plants, oil storage facilities, and other relevant control systems. The company provides a full range of engineering services including the design, construction, installation, and commissioning of landfill gas treatment plants, liquefied nitrogen, and dry ice production plants. M-TECH provides smart gas meters and metering system. G-Tech provides total solution and services in PE piping system including quality PE pipes and fittings. S-Tech principal businesses include product development, solution implementation and system integration. S-Tech provides cloud computing solutions and other IT products as well as consulting services to companies both within and outside of the Towngas group.
