Tembec Inc. (Tembec or 'the company') is engaged in integrated forest products business. The company manufactures lumber, paper pulp, specialty cellulose pulp, chemical products, and paper. The company operates 13 manufacturing sites in North America and France and directly manages approximately 10 million hectares (approximately 25 million acres) of Canadian forestlands.
The company operates through four business segments: Specialty Cellulose Pulp, Paper, Forest Products, and Paper Pulp.
The Specialty Cellulose Pulp segment manufactures cellulose ethers, nitrocellulose and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) through its two manufacturing facilities. The pulp mills (Temiscaming, Quebec and Tartas, France) produce specialty cellulose pulps with an annual capacity of 310,000 tons per year. The Specialty Cellulose Pulp produced at two pulp mills is used in a variety of specialized products such as pharmaceuticals, food additives, and industrial chemicals. This segment also includes a stand-alone resin business which produces powder and liquid phenolic resins at two operating sites in Quebec: Temiscaming and Longueuil. The segment also operates a third facility located in Toledo, Ohio which manufactures powder and liquid amino-resins. In FY2016, the Specialty Cellulose Pulp segment reported revenues of CAD457 million, which accounted for 30.5% of the company's total revenue.
The company's Paper segment includes two paper manufacturing facilities with three paper machines. The Ontario mill produces newsprint on two machines and Quebec mill produces multi-ply coated bleached board on one machine. The board mill is partially integrated with a high-yield pulp mill. The total capacity of the Paper segment is 400,000 tons. The company's primarily offers light weight, fully bleached coated board used in commercial printing. In FY2016, the Paper segment reported revenues of CAD392 million, which accounted for 26.2% of the company's total revenue.
The Forest Products segment's principal activity is focused on the production of softwood (SPF) lumber. The Forest Products segment is divided into two main areas of activity: forest resource management and manufacturing operations. The forest resource management group manages the company's Canadian forestry operations. It includes the harvesting of timber, either directly or by contractual agreements, silviculture and regeneration work. It is also responsible for third party timber purchases to supplement total requirements. The forest resource management group works closely with provincial governments to ensure harvesting plans and operations. The Forest Products segment operations are located in Quebec and Ontario. The segment focuses on three main product areas: SPF lumber, specialty wood and engineered wood. In FY2016, the Forest Products segment reported revenues of CAD368 million, which accounted for 24.5% of the company's total revenue.
The Paper Pulp segment consists of two pulp manufacturing facilities. These pulps are produced with a combination of mechanical and chemical processes. Tembec produces hardwood grades made from maple, aspen and birch. The total capacity of the Paper Pulp segment is 570,000 tons. In FY2016, the Paper Pulp segment reported revenues of CAD282 million, which accounted for 18.8% of the company's total revenue.
Geographically, the company classifies its operations into five segments, namely the US, Canada, China, European Union, and other areas. In FY2016, the US accounted for 36.8% of the company's total revenues, followed by Canada with 19.1%; China with 12.3%; European Union with 19.1%; and other areas with 12.6%.
