Tata Communications Limited (Tata Communications or "the company") is a facilities-based provider of a range of integrated communications services. The company is one of the leading providers of international long distance (ILD) voice services and operates one of the largest global submarine cable networks in the world. The company has operations in India, the US, the UK, South Africa, Bermuda and other regions.
The company operates through five reportable business segments: data and managed services (DMS), voice solutions (VS), South Africa Operations (SAO), payment solutions (PS), and others.
Tata Communications' DMS segment offers corporate data transmission services, virtual private network (VPN) signaling and roaming services, television and other network and managed services. The segment also offers data center colocation and network management services. Tata Communications’ DMS segment offers two key services, including carrier data and enterprise data. The carrier data services include data, Internet protocol (IP) and mobile signaling services through its fibre optic sub-sea network ring known as the Tata Communications’ global network (TGN). TGN consists of 7,00,000 kilometers of terrestrial and subsea network fibre and also provides high-speed bandwidth connectivity to other telecom operators and internet service providers (ISPs) worldwide. The company also has the largest mobile signaling inter-provider network and supports mobile network operators (MNOs) by offering widest-reaching service for mobile broadband enablement. It has an extensive portfolio of mobile services, including IPX+ connectivity, voice, messaging, roaming value added services and 3G\long term evolution (LTE) signaling. The company’s enterprise data services include dedicated point-to-point connectivity (IPL); internet (IP-based) connectivity (IAS within India and IP transit elsewhere); and multi-location connectivity through global virtual private networks (GVPN). In FY2016, the Data and Managed Services segment reported revenues of INR101,650.1 million, which accounted for 48.4% of the company's total revenue.
The VS segment provides services primarily to telecommunications carriers. It offers international long distance (ILD) and national long distance (NLD) voice services. The company’s ILD has over 300 direct routes suppliers with leading international voice telecommunication providers. The company NLD business includes voice trading toolkit platform, which enables carriers to more efficiently manage their voice business; mobile local number service (LNS), which enables service providers to offer SMS-enabled DID numbers to their end; HD voice service with VoLTE (Voice over LTE); and mobile voice over internet protocol (VoIP). In FY2016, the Voice Solutions segment reported revenues of INR82,089.9 million, which accounted for 39% of the company's total revenue.
Tata Communications' SAO business is carried out by Neotel, which offers wholesale international voice and data transit, enterprise business solution services for the wholesale and corporate market, and telephony and data services for retail customers in South Africa. In FY2016, the SAO segment reported revenues of INR20,827.7 million, which accounted for 9.9% of the company's total revenue.
The company’s PS segment includes end-to-end ATM deployment, end-to-end POS enablement, hosted core banking, end to end financial inclusion and card issuance and related managed services and switching services to banking sector carried out by Tata Communications Payment Solutions. In FY2016, the Payment Solutions segment reported revenues of INR5,665.2 million, which accounted for 2.7% of the company's total revenue.
Others segment primarily includes the company’s joint venture business.
Geographically, the company classifies its operations into five segments, namely India, the US, the UK, South Africa, and Bermuda. In FY2016, India segment accounted for 44.4% of the company's total revenues, followed by the US with 24.3%; the UK with 15.3%; South Africa with 15.1%; and Bermuda with 0.9%.
