Takara is a Japan-based holding company with 45 subsidiaries and three affiliate companies. The group's businesses include manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages and seasonings and health foods. It also engages in the development of biomedical technologies such as cell medicine and gene therapy. The group operates in Japan, North America, Europe, China and other regions of Asia.
The group operates through four business segments: Takara Shuzo Group (Takara Shuzo), Takara Bio Group (Takara Bio), Takara Healthcare, and other.
Takara, through its subsidiary Takara Shuzo, engages in the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages and seasonings. The segment's product offerings include a wide range of products under categories, including shochu, sake, light-alcohol refreshers, wine, whisky, Chinese alcoholic beverages, raw alcohol and seasonings. It is also engaged in logistics and other related businesses.
Takara Bio includes three biomedical divisions: bio-industry business, gene therapy business and agri-bio business. The bio-industry business is involved in the development and sale of research reagents and scientific instruments. In addition, it offers value-added contract research services including high-speed sequence analysis and contract production services for induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). The gene therapy business engages in in-house clinical development of gene and cell therapies for cancer and other diseases by utilizing its core gene and cell engineering technologies.
The agri-bio business of Takara Bio segment analyzes the properties of traditional Japanese foodstuffs utilizing its biotechnology and uses these ingredients to develop and manufacture health food products. Takara Bio also uses its technologies for breeding and large-scale cultivation of mushrooms.
Takara Healthcare develops health food products using ingredients and technologies, developed by Takara Bio and sells them through online stores, direct marketing activities and mail-order sales.
Takara's other segment includes its printing business and other subsidiaries.
