Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) is a manufacturer of semiconductors for fabless semiconductor companies and integrated device manufacturers (IDMs). The company offers a range of wafer fabrication processes, including processes to manufacture complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) logic, mixed-signal, radio frequency, embedded memory, BiCMOS mixed-signal and other semiconductors. TSMC also provides design, mask making, bumping, probing, assembly and testing services. The company operates through a single reporting segment: foundry, which is engaged in the manufacturing, selling, packaging, testing and computer-aided design of ICs and other semiconductor devices and the manufacturing of masks. The company's other businesses are primarily engaged in the researching, developing, designing, manufacturing and selling of solid state lighting devices and renewable energy and efficiency related technologies and products. TSMC operates three advanced 12-inch wafer fabs, four eight-inch wafer fabs, one six-inch wafer fab (fab 2) and two backend fabs. The company also manages two eight-inch fabs through wholly-owned subsidiaries: WaferTech in the US and TSMC China Company Limited. It also obtains eight-inch wafer capacity from other companies, in which it has an equity stake. The company manufactures different types of semiconductors with different specific functions by changing the number and the combinations of conducting, insulating and semiconducting layers and by defining different patterns in which such layers are applied on the wafer. Key semiconductors manufactured by TSMC include logic semiconductors, mixed-signal/RF semiconductors, CMOS image sensor semiconductors, and high voltage semiconductors. Logic semiconductors process digital data to control the operation of electronic systems. TSMC offers standard logic devices used in mobile computing chips, application processors, microcontrollers, digital signal processors (DSP), graphic chips and chipsets. Mixed-signal/RF semiconductors include a combination of analog and digital devices on a single semiconductor to process both analog and digital data. TSMC manufactures mixed-signal/RF semiconductors using both the CMOS and BiCMOS processes. TSMC provides CMOS image sensor semiconductors, which are primarily used in camera phones and tablets. The company offers a range of CMOS image sensors, characterized by technology features including low dark current, high sensitivity, small pixel size and high dynamic range achieved through integration with mixed mode processes. The company also offers a range of high-voltage processes including high voltage CMOS (HVCMOS), bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (diffusion metal oxide semiconductor) (BCD) and ultra-high voltage technology (UHV), ranging from five volts (V) to 800V, which are suitable for various panel-size display driver and power supply applications. TSMC also offers a range of design services and technology platforms. The company provides design infrastructure to modern IC designers for optimizing productivity and cycle time. It offers infrastructures, including design flow for electronic design automation (EDA), silicon proven building blocks such as libraries and intellectual properties (IPs), simulation and verification design kits such as process design kit (PDK) and technology files. The company offers a multi-project wafer processing service that allows it to provide multiple customers with circuits produced with the same mask. TSMC extended this program to all of its customers and library and intellectual property partners using process technologies, ranging from the latest 10, 16, 28, 40, 45, 55 and 65-nanometer (nm) processes to 0.18, 0.25, 0.35 and 0.5-micron. In FY2016, the company generated 96% of the total revenue from wafers and the remaining 4% from others. Geographically, the company classifies its business operations into five regions: the US, Asia, Taiwan, EMEA and Others. In FY2016, the company generated 64.4% of the total revenue from the US, followed by Asia with 15.6%, Taiwan with 13.4%, EMEA with 6.1%, and Others with (0.5%).
