The global surfactants market is expected to reach 19,495.66 kilo metric tons by 2023, registering an estimated CAGR of 3.56% over the forecast period of 2018-2023. One of the major factors driving the growth of the global market is the growth of the Asia-Pacific personal care industry. The expanding application base of bio-based and specialty surfactants also serve as other important factors driving the market.

Growing Personal Care Industry in Asia-Pacific

Personal care is one of the major end-users for surfactants. Surfactants are used as ingredients in a variety of products in the personal care segment, such as foaming agents, dispersants, emulsifiers, solubilizing agents, cleansers, and conditioners, among others. With the increasing women employment region and the influence of western culture, the demand for personal care & cosmetic products has increased. Besides this, the young generation, which includes school, and college students have also become a great source of income for personal care and cosmetic products in the region. Hence, all such factors are leading to the growth of the personal care industry in the region, which is further driving the growth of the surfactants market.

Soap & Detergent serves as the Major Application Segment

In terms of the market share in the application segment, soap and detergent occupy the largest share in the global market. Detergent is usually a mixture of surfactants, used mainly for the purpose of cleaning, and is available in varying dilutions. Detergents consist of alkylbenzenesulfonates, which have chemical properties similar to soap, but with higher solubility in hard water. However, the personal care segment is expected to register the highest CAGR during the forecast period. The ingredients used for the preparation of surfactants in personal care products include triglycerides, methyl esters, and an array of fatty acids and alcohols.

Asia-Pacific to Dominate the Market

In 2017, Asia-Pacific dominated the market studied and is expected to witness the highest CAGR during the forecast period. Asia-Pacific has become the largest consumer, as well as producer of surfactants. The production has reached such high levels that it has become a major hub for exporting of cosmetics and personal care products to developed nations, such as the United States. In Asia-Pacific, China is the largest consumer and producer of surfactants in the region, supported by the domestic consumption and presence of a large number of local producers in the country.

The major players include – Stepan Co., Kao Chemicals (Kao Corp.), AkzoNobel N.V., and BASF SE, Evonik, amongst others.
