The market for melamine is expected to register a decent growth with a CAGR of 5.62%, in terms of revenue, during the forecast period, 2018 to 2023. This healthy growth is primarily driven by the strong demand from the construction industry.
Strong Demand from the Construction Industry
Melamine is majorly used in decorative laminates, wood adhesives, and paints and coatings. Melamine decorative laminates are some of the most commonly used plastic laminated sheets. Some of the applications include decorative acoustic flagstones, suspended baffles, panels and partitions, and soundproofing of roll-shutters boxes in melamine foam. Melamine-based wood adhesives, due to their resistance to moisture, are used in particleboards, fiberboard, and plywood. These wood adhesives are also used in the construction industry for wood flooring and furniture. The construction sector across the world, especially in Asia-Pacific and Middle-East & Africa, is experiencing healthy growth. The emerging economies, such as China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Philippines, in the Asia-Pacific region have been witnessing a robust growth in construction activities. Robust economic performance in 2017 is expected to further accelerate the growth in housing construction activities in the region. The Middle East region includes countries, such as UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, etc., where the tourism sector has seen continuous growth, with an increase in the number of tourists across the world. This regional market has increased constructional activities for hotel buildings and infrastructural activities for tourism. Hence, with the growth of the construction industry, the demand for Melamine is also expected to grow during the forecast period.
Laminates Application Segment to Contribute Major Demand to the Market
Melamine resins are the polymers of choice in the outer or decorative layer of laminates, used in the manufacture of counter and table tops, kitchen cabinets, flooring, furniture, etc. The melamine resins impart hardness, transparency, stain resistance, freedom from discoloration, and overall durability. For this application, the resin which is used to saturate the overlay or decorative sheet is prepared by reacting, approximately, two moles of formaldehyde per mole of melamine. Melamine laminated sheet is in multilayer structure, including surface paper, decoration paper, and bottom paper. The surface paper is to protect patterns and designs on the decorative paper, to make the surface brighter, solider, and harder, and to provide it with better wear-resistance and corrosion resistance. Melamine laminated sheet is made of thermosetting plastic, so it has superior heat-resistance and does not get softened, cracked, or bubbled at temperature over 100°C. It is well resistant to ironing and fire. They are commonly applied to the surface decoration projects of walls, columns, table tops, furniture, and suspended ceilings, etc. Apart from the huge demand contribution, this application segment is also exhibiting the fastest growth which is expected to boost the consumption of melamine during the forecast period.
Asia-Pacific to Lead the Market Demand
Asia-Pacific represents the largest regional market for melamine materials in the global market share in 2017. This immense demand for melamine is a consequence of the growing trends of automotive and construction industries in the region. In Asia-Pacific, China provides the major market for the melamine of the regional market share. Despite the volatile growth in the real estate sector, the significant development of rail and road infrastructure by the Chinese government, in order to withstand the expanding industrial and service sectors, has resulted in a significant growth of the Chinese construction industry in the recent years. As the construction industry is dominated by state-owned enterprises, the increased government spending is boosting the industry in the country. This scenario will concrete the demand for melamine materials in the nearby future. The large market size coupled with the huge growth of Asia-Pacific is quite instrumental in expansion of the global melamine market.
