Chernihiv (Ukraine), is likely to become the potato processing hub in Eastern Europe. The company PPCE VIMAL currently has two starch factories operating in the region and targets to open operation of the third factory in September 2018. The new plant is being built with the technical facilitation of the Danish-based company SiccaDania, which further plans to convert the waste and effluents from the facility into raw materials for the production of products with high value-addition (potato protein, liquid organic fertilizers and food fibres).

After the introduction of the protein isolate trend, some companies have developed branded version of the protein, which comprises of the active ingredient, protease inhibitor PI-2, (a protein naturally derived from potatoes). Such branded ingredients include: Slendesta® (Kemin Health) and Solathin® (Cyvex Nutrition) introduced in the weight loss market in the recent years.

The European potato protein market is expected to register a CAGR of 4.92% during the forecast period 2018-2023.

The major driver for potato protein in the region is the increasing use of potato protein in dietary supplements, and as meat substitutes due to shift towards vegan diet. The increasing demand is also because of consumer preference for natural and non-processed ingredients. Extracted by specialized technologies, the protein composition of the isolate is said to contain somewhere between 90-95% amino acid concentrations, along with high bioavailability and solubility.

With growing application in several sector of food and beverage particularly in formulations in beverage, snacks & bars, animal feed products, and others; the market is expected to boost at tremendous growth rate in the coming years.

The processing plants for potato are more in Eastern Europe compared to western part of the region. The potato protein market in the region is led by Germany, followed by France, and United Kingdom.
