Enel S.p.A. (Enel or 'the company') is an electricity operator in Italy. The company is engaged in the generation, distribution, and sales of electricity. The company operates a range of hydroelectric, thermoelectric, nuclear, geothermal, wind-power, and photovoltaic power stations. Enel’s operations spanned across Europe, North America, Latin America, Africa and Asia.
Enel operates in 31 countries across four continents, generating energy with a net installed capacity of around 83 gigawatts (GW) and distributing electricity and gas across a network spanning about 2.1 million kilometers (km). At the end of FY2016, Enel generated a total of 261.8 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity and sold a total of 263 TWh of electricity. Additionally, the company sold a total of 10.6 billion cubic feet of gas to end users and transported a total of 426 TWh of electricity on its own distribution network.
Enel operates through six business segments: Italy; Iberia; Latin America, Europe and North Africa; North and Central America; and Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.
The Italy segment focuses on developing Enel's presence and coordinating its operations in the electricity and gas market in Italy. During FY2016, the segment generated net electricity of 60,913 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) with net capacity of 27,761 MW. The segment sold a total of 94,139 million kWh of electricity. Moreover, the segment’s gas sales totaled 4,591 million cubic meters serving a total of 3.9 million customers.
In FY2016, the Italy segment reported revenues of EUR36,081 million, which accounted for 51.2% of the company's total revenue.
The Iberia segment focuses on developing Enel's presence and coordinating its operations in the electricity market. In FY2016, the segment generated a total of 72,323 million kWh of electricity with net capacity of 22,744 MW. In addition, the segment sold a total of 93,490 million kWh. Moreover, the segment transported a total of 109,109 million kWh using a network of 316,562 km of distribution lines.
In FY2016, the Iberia segment reported revenues of EUR18,831 million, which accounted for 26.7% of the company's total revenue.
Enel’s Latin America segment operates in the field of electricity generation and energy products in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Colombia, and Uruguay. At the end of FY2016, the segment reported net electricity generation of 62,165 million kWh with net capacity of 18,915 MW. Additionally, the company sold a total of 63,090 million kWh in FY2016. Moreover, Enel transported a total of 78,525 million kWh of electricity using a network of 322,146 km of distribution lines.
In FY2016, the Latin America segment reported revenues of EUR10,739 million, which accounted for 15.2% of the company's total revenue.
The company’s Europe and North Africa focuses on developing Enel's presence and coordinating its operations in the electricity and gas markets of Romania, Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Germany. In FY2016, the segment generated a total of 53,613 million kWh of electricity with net capacity of 9,810 MW. Also, the company sold a total of 12,335 million kWh in FY2016 and transported a total of 78,525 million kWh of electricity using a network of 91,458 km of distribution lines.
In FY2016, the Europe And North Africa segment reported revenues of EUR3,618 million, which accounted for 5.1% of the company's total revenue.
The North and Central America segment focuses on developing Enel's presence and coordinating its operations in the electricity and gas markets of the US, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, and Costa Rica. In FY2016, the segment’s net electricity generation totaled 12,268 million kWh with a net efficient capacity of 2,792 MW.
In FY2016, the North and Central America segment reported revenues of EUR1,122 million, which accounted for 1.6% of the company's total revenue.
Enel’s Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia segment operates in the field of electricity renewables in India, South Africa, and Kenya. During FY2016, the segment’s net electricity generation totaled 530 million kWh with a net efficient capacity of 658 MW.
In FY2016, the Sub Saharan Africa and Asia segment reported revenues of EUR29 million, which accounted for 0.2% of the company's total revenue.
