Emera Inc. (Emera or 'the company'), through its subsidiaries, is engaged in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution; and gas transmission and utility energy services. The company operates in Northeastern US, Atlantic Canada, and the three Caribbean countries of St. Lucia, Grand Bahama, and Barbados.

Emera operates through six reportable segments: Emera Florida and New Mexico; Emera Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI); Emera Caribbean; Emera Energy; Emera Maine; and Corporate and Others.

During FY2016, the company produced a total of 10,839 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of power and sold a total of 10,118 GWh of power with a generating capacity of 10,060 megawatts (MW). The company also operated 12,199 kilometers of transmission lines and 63,865 kilometers of distribution lines. Additionally, Emera owned 36,350 kilometers of gas mains and 11,265 kilometers of gas service lines.

Emera Florida and New Mexico segment consists of TECO Energy, the parent company of the companies: TEC, New Mexico Gas Company (NMGC) and TECO Finance.

TEC has two divisions namely: Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas System (PGS). Tampa Electric is a vertically integrated regulated electric utility engaged in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity services to 736,000 customers in in West Central Florida. It operates a generating capacity of 4,730 megawatts (MW), of which 60% is natural gas- fired, 35% is conventional coal-fired, 5% coal and petroleum coke. Tampa Electric also owns 2,140 kilometers of transmission lines and 18,370 kilometers of distribution lines. PGS is a regulated gas distribution utility engaged in the purchase, distribution and sale of natural gas for residential, commercial, industrial and electric power generation services to 374,000 customers in Florida. It includes 19,950 kilometers of natural gas mains and 11,265 kilometers of service lines.

The segment’s NMGC is a regulated gas distribution utility engaged in the purchase, transmission, distribution and sale of natural gas to 522,000 customers in New Mexico. It includes 2,600 km of transmission lines and 16,400 km of mains. Emera Florida and New Mexico also has TECO Finance, a financing subsidiary of TECO Energy.

In FY2016, the Emera Florida and New Mexico segment reported revenues of CAD1,839 million, which accounted for 43% of the company's total revenue.

NSPI segment is a fully-integrated regulated electric utility and is the primary electricity supplier in Nova Scotia, Canada. NSPI provides electricity generation, transmission and distribution services to approximately 511,000 customers. NSPI owns 2,487 MW of generating capacity, of which approximately 43% is coal fired; 29% is natural gas and/or oil; 19% of which is hydro and wind; 7% is pet coke and 2% is biomass-fuelled generation. In addition, NSPI has contracts to purchase renewable energy from independent power producers (IPP). IPP generation includes wind, tidal, biogas and biomass-fuelled generation. Additionally, NSPI owns approximately 5,000 kilometers of transmission lines and 27,000 kilometers of distribution lines.

In FY2016, the NSPI segment reported revenues of CAD1,356 million, which accounted for 31.7% of the company's total revenue.

Emera Caribbean segment includes an 100% investment in Emera (Caribbean) Incorporated (ECI) and its wholly owned subsidiary Barbados Light& Power Company (BLPC); a 51.9% indirect controlling interest, through ECI, in Dominica Electricity Services (DOMLEC); a 80.4% direct and indirect interest in Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC); a 19.1% indirect interest in St. Lucia Electricity Services Limited (Lucelec); and a wholly owned indirect interest in Emera Utility Service Bahamas.

BLPC is a vertically-integrated utility and the provider of electricity on the Caribbean island of Barbados serving approximately 126,000 customers. BLPC owns 239 MW of oil-fired generation, 150 kilometers of transmission lines and 2,800 kilometers of distribution lines. DOMLEC is an integrated utility on the island of Dominica serving approximately 36,000 customers. DOMLEC owns 20 MW of oil-fired generation, 7 MW of hydro production, 497 kilometers of transmission lines and 716 kilometers of distribution lines. GBPC is a vertically-integrated utility and the sole provider of electricity on Grand Bahama Island. It serves approximately 19,000 customers and owns 98 MW of oil-fired generation, 138 kilometers of transmission lines and 860 kilometers of distribution facilities. Emera's Lucelec is a vertically-integrated regulated electric utility on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia.

In FY2016, the Emera Caribbean segment reported revenues of CAD419 million, which accounted for 9.8% of the company's total revenue.

Emera Energy segment consists of Emera's wholly-owned Emera Energy Services (EES), and Emera Energy Generation (EEG). EES is wholly owned physical energy marketing and trading business and EES operates wholly owned portfolio of electricity generation facilities in New England and Maritime Canada with 1,435 MW of total capacity. Additionally, the company has 50% joint venture ownership of Bear Swamp, a 600 MW pumped storage hydroelectric facility in northwestern Massachusetts.

In FY2016, the Emera Energy segment reported revenues of CAD298 million, which accounted for 7% of the company's total revenue.

Emera Maine segment is a transmission and distribution (T&D) electric utility serving approximately 157,000 customers in the State of Maine in the US. It owns and operates approximately 1,800 kilometers of transmission lines and 15,000 kilometers of distribution lines. Approximately 52% of Emera Maine’s electric revenue represents distribution operations, 35% is associated with local transmission operations and 13% is stranded cost recoveries.

In FY2016, the Emera Maine segment reported revenues of CAD297 million, which accounted for 6.9% of the company's total revenue.

Corporate and Others segment includes certain corporate wide functions, including executive management, strategic planning, treasury services, financial reporting, tax planning, corporate business development, corporate governance, internal audit, investor relations, risk management, insurance, acquisition related costs and corporate human resource activities.

Also, the segment includes consolidated investments in Emera Utility Services, a utility services contractor primarily operating in Atlantic Canada and Emera Reinsurance Limited, a captive insurance company providing insurance and reinsurance to Emera and its affiliates. The segment also has investments in Brunswick Pipeline, an NEB regulated, 145 kilometer pipeline that transports natural gas from Saint John, New Brunswick, to markets in the northeastern US; Emera US Holdings, a wholly owned holding company for certain of Emera’s assets located in the US; and Emera US Finance LP, a wholly owned financing subsidiary of Emera.

The segment’s non-consolidated investments include: 100% investment in NSPML, a transmission project, including two 170-kilometer subsea cables, between the island of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia; and 62.7% investment in the partnership capital of LIL, an electricity transmission project in Newfoundland and Labrador to enable the transmission of Muskrat Falls energy between Labrador and the island of Newfoundland. Emera also has a 12.9% investment in Maritmes and Northeast Pipeline (M& NP).

In FY2016, the Corporate and Other segment reported revenues of CAD69 million, which accounted for 1.6% of the company's total revenue.

Geographically, the company classifies its operations into five geographies, namely the US, Canada, Barbados, The Bahamas, and Dominica. In FY2016, the US segment accounted for 54.9% of the company's total revenues, followed by Canada with 35.3%; Barbados with 5.9%; The Bahamas with 2.8%; and Dominica with 1.1%.
