EDP - Energias de Portugal, SA (EDP or 'the company') is a vertically integrated utility company. It is engaged in the generation, distribution, and supply of electricity in Portugal and has significant operations in electricity and gas in Spain. Additionally, EDP generates solar photovoltaic energy in Portugal and Romania and has electricity generation, distribution and supply activities in Brazil.
For FY2016, the company's total installed capacity was 25,223 mega-watt (MW) of electricity and generated a total of 70,011 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity. EDP's hydro installed capacity totaled 7,946 MW, thermal installed capacity totaled 7,016 MW, wind installed capacity reached 9,969 MW and 291 MW of installed capacity is held by others during the year. In addition, the company distributed 78,214 GWh of electricity through 10.1 million supply points and 33,555 GWh of gas using 1.4 million supply points, in FY2016. Moreover, EDP supplied about 66,904 GWh of electricity to 9.8 million customers and 23,827 GWh of gas to 1.49 million customers during the year.
EDP operates through five business segments: Liberalized Activities, Regulated Networks, EDP Brazil, EDP Renováveis, and LT Contracted Generation.
The Liberalized Activities segment corresponds to the activity of unregulated generation and supply of electricity and gas in Portugal and Spain. This segment includes, namely, the following companies: EDP - Gestao da Producao de Energia, Empresa Hidroelectrica do Guadiana, Hidrocantabrico Energia, and Central Térmica Ciclo Combinado Grupo 4, S.A., including others. Additionally, the segment includes the Iberian energy management business unit (UNGE) which is responsible for the management of purchasing and sales of energy in the Iberian market, and also for the related hedging transactions.
In FY2016, the Liberalized Activities segment reported revenues of EUR8,388 million, which accounted for 44.7% of the company's total revenue.
The Regulated Networks segment is engaged in the activities of electricity and gas distribution in Portugal and Spain and last resort supplier. This segment includes various companies namely, EDP Distribuicao - Energia, EDP Servico Universal, EDP Gas Servico Universal and Naturgas Energia Distribucion, among others.
At the end of FY2016, EDP distributed a total of 44,599 GWh of electricity in Portugal and 9,190 GWh of electricity in Spain. It also distributed a total of 7,144 GWh of gas in Portugal and 26,441 GWh of gas in Spain. The company served a total of 5.4 million customers in Portugal and 1.1 million customers in Spain. In addition, EDP operated 176,890 kilometers of overhead electricity distribution lines and 48,507 kilometers of underground lines in Portugal. In Spain, it operated a total of 15,677 overhead distribution lines and 4,842 underground lines.
In FY2016, the Regulated Networks segment reported revenues of EUR5,493 million, which accounted for 29.3% of the company's total revenue.
The EDP Brasil segment includes the activities of electricity generation, distribution and supply in Brazil, and is composed by the holding EDP Energias do Brasil and all its subsidiaries. EDP Brasil operates in the states of Sao Paulo, Espirito Santo, Tocantins, Ceara, and Santa Catarina.
The electricity generation activity at EDP Brasil includes the management of hydroelectric power stations and mini-hydro power stations located in the states of Espirito Santo, Mato Grosso do Sul and Tocantins. In electricity distribution, EDP is present in the State of Espirito Santo and in the State of Sao Paulo, through EDP Escelsa and EDP Bandeirante, respectively.
For FY2016, the total electricity distributed in Brazil accounted for 24,425 GWh. The installed capacity in Brazil totaled to 2,670 MW and the generation totaled 8,880 GWh of electricity for FY2016. The segment operated a total of 91,337 kilometers overhead electricity distribution lines and 239 underground lines. EDP served a total of 3.3 million customers in Brazil.
In FY2016, the EDP Brasil segment reported revenues of EUR2,427 million, which accounted for 12.9% of the company's total revenue.
The EDP Renovaveis (EDPR) segment in involved in the power generation activity through renewable energy resources and includes all the companies of EDPR Europe, EDPR North America and EDPR Brasil subgroups. EDP Renovaveis owns, operates and develops EDP’s wind and solar capacity. At the end of FY2016, the segment had installed capacity of 10,052 MW of renewable energy and generated total of 24,473 GWh of renewable energy.
In FY2016, the EDP Renovaveis segment reported revenues of EUR1,485 million, which accounted for 8% of the company's total revenue.
The LT Contracted Generation segment involves the activity of electricity generation of plants with compensation mechanism to maintain the contractual balance (CMEC) and SRP plants in Portugal. This segment includes EDP - Gestao da Producao de Energia, Fisigen - Empresa de Cogeracao, Pebble-Hydro - Consultoria, Investimentos e Servicos, and EDP Small Hydro, S.A.
During FY2016, in Portugal, EDP distributed 44,599 GWh of electricity and 7,114 GWh of gas with an installed capacity of 10,428 MW. While, in Spain, the company distributed 9,190 GWh of electricity and 26,441 GWh of gas with an installed capacity of 5,723 MW
In FY2016, the LT Contracted Generation segment reported revenues of EUR960 million, which accounted for 5.1% of the company's total revenue.
Geographically, the company classifies its operations into five segments, namely Portugal, Spain, Brazil, the US, and Others. In FY2016, Portugal segment accounted for 52.8% of the company's total revenues, followed by Spain with 24.8%; Brazil with 16.9%; the US with 3.6%; and Others with 1.9%.
