Edison S.p.A. (Edison or 'the company') is one of the largest energy operators in Italy and Europe. The company is engaged in the procurement, production, and distribution of electric power, natural gas, and crude oil. As of December 31, 2016, Electricite de France (EDF) group holds 99.483% interest in Edison. Edison operates in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

Edison operates through three business segments: Hydrocarbons Operations; Electric Power Operations; and Corporate Activities and Other.

In the Hydrocarbons Operations segment, the company is engaged in production to importation, distribution and sale of natural gas and crude oil. Currently, Edison has 60 concessions and permits in Italy and 50 concessions and permits abroad including Egypt, Norway, Croatia, Algeria, the UK, Falkland Islands and Israel. In FY2016, Edison produced 4.1 million barrels of crude oil including 2.2 million barrels from Italy and approximately two million barrels from outside Italy. The production of natural gas, counting the combined output of the Italian and international operations, totaled 1,924 million cubic meters in FY2016. Additionally, the company's gas sales in Italy totaled 21.9 billion cubic meters. The company’s hydrocarbon reserves (proven reserves plus 50% of probable reserves) totaled about 40.4 billion cubic meter equivalent (248.4 MBoe) at December 31, 2016. In FY2016, the Hydrocarbons Operations segment reported revenues of E6,031 million, which accounted for 54.7% of the company's total revenue.

In the Electric Power Operations segment, Edison has a fleet of power plants with a diversified production mix ranging from combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants to hydroelectric, wind, solar, and biomass. At the end of FY2016, Edison has 21 thermal power plants, 72 hydroelectric power plants, 35 wind power plants in Italy, five photovoltaic systems and one biomass power plant. In FY2016, Edison's plants produced a total of 91,194 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electric power including 16,765 GWh of electric power from thermoelectric power plants, 2,490 GWh from hydroelectric power plants and 1,103 GWh from wind power and other renewables. Currently, Edison also operates a six MW solid-biomass generating facility in Castellavazzo (Italy) through the controlled company Sistemi di Energia. In Greece, Edison has two power plants, one in Thessaloniki (390MW) and one in Thisvi (460 MW). During FY2016, Edison's total installed capacity is 6.5 gigawatt (GW). In FY2016, the Electric Power Operations segment reported revenues of E5,682 million, which accounted for 51.5% of the company's total revenue.

Edison is focused on developing and managing gas storage activities through Edison Stoccaggio. Edison Stoccaggio operates three gas storage centers in Italy: Cellino (TE) which has a capacity of about 120 million cubic meters of natural gas, Collalto (TV) with a capacity of about 600 million cubic meters of natural gas, and San Potito e Cotignola (RE) with a capacity of about 400 million cubic meters of natural gas.

The company is also engaged in the development of new infrastructures to import natural gas for Europe and Italy. It operates Adriatic LNG Terminal which imports eight billion cubic meters of natural gas a year. Other important projects under development are the Galsi gas pipeline, which will link Algeria to Sardinia and Tuscany; the ITGI gas pipeline, which will link Italy and Europe to the Caspian Sea region; and the IGB gas pipeline connecting Greece to Bulgaria.

Edison carries out gas transmission activities through its subsidiary, Infrastrutture Trasporto Gas (ITG). ITG is one of the three national grid gas transmission operators active on the Italian territory, and manages the Cavarzere-Minerbio pipeline, a natural gas pipeline which allows the importation of around eight billion cubic meters of gas through the Adriatic LNG terminal into the national grid.

The company carries out its natural gas distribution activities through its subsidiary, Edison Distribuzione Gas (Edison DG). Edison DG distributes each year about 300 million cubic meters of natural gas to 150,000 customers in Northern and Central Italy and 1,400 kilometers (km) of low-pressure pipelines, 1,100 km of medium-pressure pipelines and 1,000 km of connecting-pipe systems.

Edison also operates an engineering department which is a center of excellence for technology development and modernization of facilities, an instrument for the technical setting, planning, design and implementation of the company investments. Edison’s engineering department has been operating according to UNI EN ISO 9001: 2000 standard since 2001.

Edison Trading, a wholly owned subsidiary of Edison, carries out the company's energy management activities. These activities range from maximizing the value of the company's merchant facilities, by optimizing power plants production; to identifying and executing, on major wholesale markets and power exchanges in Europe; and buy and sell transactions involving power and environmental securities, by means of physical contracts or financial instruments, both for trading and hedging purposes.

The Corporate Activities and Other segment include those operations of Edison, that engage in activities that are not industrial in nature, and certain holding companies and real estate companies. In FY2016, the Corporate Activities and Other segment reported revenues of E51 million, which accounted for 0.5% of the company's total revenue.
