Edison International (Edison or 'the company') through its subsidiaries is a generator and distributor of electric power and also an investor in infrastructure and energy assets, including renewable energy. It is also the parent company of subsidiaries that are engaged in competitive businesses focused on providing energy services to commercial and industrial customers, including distributed resources, engaging in transmission opportunities, and exploring distributed water treatment and recycling. Edison primarily operates in the US. The company conducts its business through its subsidiary, Southern California Edison Company (SCE). SCE is an investor-owned public utility primarily engaged in the business of supplying and delivering electricity to an approximately 50,000 square-mile area of southern California. The SCE service area contains a population of nearly 15 million people and SCE serves the population through approximately five million customer accounts. These customers included commercial, residential, agricultural and other customers, industrial customers, and public authorities. SCE supplies electricity to its customers through transmission and distribution networks. Its transmission facilities include sub-transmission facilities that are located primarily in California, Nevada, and Arizona. These sub-transmission facilities deliver power from generating sources to the distribution network and consist of lines ranging from 33 kilovolts (kV) to 500 kV and substations. SCE's distribution system, which takes power from substations to customers, includes over 53,000 line miles of overhead lines, 38,000 line miles of underground lines, and approximately 800 distribution substations, all of which are located in California. SCE’s total grid assets include 1.4 million electricity poles, 700,000 transformers and 103,000 miles of distribution and transmission lines. SCE generating facilities include 33 hydroelectric plants with a generating capacity of 1,153 megawatts (MW), Pebbly Beach Generating Station (11 MW), Mountainview Units 3 and 4 (1,050 MW), three Peaker Plants (147 MW), Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station (591 MW), 2 Fuel Cells (2 MW), Mira Loma Energy Storage (20 MW), two Enhanced Peaker Plants (98 MW) and 25 Solar photovoltaic (PV) Plants (91 MW). As of December 31, 2016, the SCE’s share of the total generating capacity was 3,175.4 MW. Moreover, Edison is developing its competitive businesses as it continues to see merit in the ownership and operation of initially small, targeted investments in energy services that utilize technologies and markets to capitalize on changes in the electricity industry as a matter of corporate strategy. The competitive businesses are held by the Edison Energy Group (Edison Energy). Edison Energy operations are completely independent of and unconnected to SCE. Edison Energy, LLC is an independent advisory and services company with the capabilities to develop and integrate an array of energy solutions for the largest energy users nationwide. Edison Energy, LLC focuses on helping the nation's largest energy users simultaneously reduce their energy costs, improve the environmental performance of their operations, ensure energy resiliency, and manage exposure to energy price risk. Edison Transmission, a wholly owned subsidiary of Edison Energy, pursues competitive electric transmission projects nationwide. This business intends to sponsor, develop, own, operate and maintain transmission projects that will enhance the reliability of regional transmission systems and provide for the delivery of energy from renewable generation projects. Edison Water Resources, a wholly owned subsidiary of Edison, develops, constructs, owns, and operates water treatment facilities. The business provides reliable, sustainable, and local sources of new water through a variety of water purification and treatment technologies. Edison Water Resources offerings advance state and local goals in response to the ongoing drought in California. The business focuses on the use of onsite wastewater recycling units as well as small, energy-efficient, reverse osmosis units to purify brackish groundwater in order to increase supply of water from local sources. SoCore Energy is a market leader in commercial and industrial solar portfolio development. SoCore offers multisite retailers, REITs and industrial companies portfolio-wide solar solutions that provide energy cost savings and carbon reduction opportunities. As of December 31, 2016, SoCore Energy constructed and achieved commercial operations for 94 MW of rooftop solar systems in 21 states.
