Eastman Kodak Company (Kodak or "the company") is a commercial printing and imaging company primarily focused on offering solutions for the product goods packaging and graphic communications markets, and commercializing products for the functional printing market. In addition, Kodak offers brand licensing and products and services for motion pictures and other commercial films and ink to its existing installed consumer inkjet printer base. The company operates in the Americas, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific.
Kodak operates through seven reportable segments: Print Systems, Consumer and Film, Micro 3D Printing and Packaging, Software and Solutions, Enterprise Inkjet Systems, Eastman Business Park, and Intellectual Property Solutions.
The company’s Print Systems segment comprises two lines of business including prepress solutions; and electrophotographic printing solutions. In addition, the segment provides digital and traditional product and service offerings to a range of commercial industries, including commercial print, direct mail, book publishing, newspapers and magazines and packaging. The segment’s prepress solutions provides digital offset plates which includes KODAK SONORA process free plates; computer to plate (CTP) output devices which are designed to transfer images onto aluminum offset printing plates and provide imaging for offset press applications. The electrophotographic printing solutions includes NEXPRESS printers which produces differentiated printing of short-run, personalized print applications, such as direct mail, books, marketing collateral and photo products; and DIGIMASTER printers which use monochrome electrophotographic printing technology for transactional printing, short-run books, corporate documentation, manuals and direct mail. In addition, the print systems segment provides service and support related to the product offerings. In FY2016, the Print Systems segment reported revenues of $1,018 million, which accounted for 66% of the company's total revenue.
Kodak’s Consumer and Film segment comprises three lines of business, including motion picture, industrial films and chemicals; consumer inkjet solutions; and consumer products. The motion picture, industrial chemicals and films business includes the motion picture film business serving the entertainment and advertising industries; industrial films deployed by the electronics industry to produce printed circuit boards. The business also includes related component businesses comprising polyester film; solvent recovery; and specialty chemicals, inks and dispersions. The consumer Inkjet solutions involves the sale of ink to an existing installed base of consumer inkjet printers. The consumer products business includes licensing of Kodak brands to third parties and consumer products. In FY2016, the Consumer and Film segment reported revenues of $216 million, which accounted for 14% of the company's total revenue.
The company’s Micro 3D Printing and Packaging segment comprises two lines of business including packaging and micro 3D printing. The packaging business includes flexographic printing equipment and related consumables and services. The FLEXCEL NX system provides imaging devices to deliver high productivity and consistency, as well as a full tonal range for flexographic printing. The micro 3D printing business includes printed functional materials and components. In FY2016, the Micro 3D Printing and Packaging segment reported revenues of $132 million, which accounted for 8.6% of the company's total revenue.
Kodak’s Software and Solutions segment comprises Kodak Technology Solutions and Unified Workflow Solutions. Kodak Technology Solutions provides print and managed media services that assist customers with solutions for their printing requirements and document management services, including expertise in the capture, archiving, retrieval and delivery of documents. Unified Workflow Solutions include a suite of solutions for print production workflow, including the PRINERGY workflow production software, which provide automation, web integration and integration with other Kodak systems and third-party offerings. Production workflow software is used by customers to manage digital and conventional print content from file creation to output. In FY2016, the Software and Solutions segment reported revenues of $86 million, which accounted for 5.6% of the company's total revenue.
The company’s Enterprise Inkjet Systems segment contains a base of customers which use KODAK VERSAMARK printing systems, comprised of inkjet printing heads, inks, head refurbishment services as well as on-site maintenance service from Kodak. Applications of the VERSAMARK printing systems include publishing, transactional, commercial print and direct mail. Its products are distributed directly by Kodak and indirectly through dealers. In FY2016, the Enterprise Inkjet Systems segment reported revenues of $76 million, which accounted for 4.9% of the company's total revenue.
Kodak’s Eastman Business Park segment includes the operations of the Eastman business park, a technology center and industrial complex in Rochester, New York and the leasing activities related to that space. In FY2016, the Eastman Business Park segment reported revenues of $15 million, which accounted for 1% of the company's total revenue.
The Intellectual Property Solutions segment contains the research laboratories and includes licensing as well as new business development activities related to Kodak’s patents and proprietary technology. The company conducts research and files patent applications with fundamental inventions from the Kodak Research Laboratories. Additionally, Kodak continues to file significant numbers of new patent applications in areas aligned with its core businesses. The segment also actively pursues additional revenues through commercialization partnerships and grants or external investment in commercialization of new technologies and products.
Geographically, the company classifies its operations into four segments, namely the US, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific and Canada and Latin America. In FY2016, the US segment accounted for 33.7% of the company's total revenues, followed by Europe, Middle East and Africa with 33.6%; Asia Pacific with 24.2%; and Canada and Latin America with 8.5%.
