DTE Energy Company (DTE or 'the company') is involved in the development and management of energy-related businesses and services. DTE’s utility operations consist primarily of DTE Electric and DTE Gas. DTE also has three other businesses including natural gas pipelines, gathering, and storage; power and industrial projects; and energy marketing and trading operations. The company primarily operates in the US.
DTE operates through six business segments: Electric; Energy Trading; Power and Industrial Projects; Gas; Gas Storage and Pipelines; and Corporate and Other.
The company's Electric segment consists principally of DTE Electric, an electric utility engaged in the generation, purchase, distribution and sale of electricity to approximately 2.2 million residential, commercial, and industrial customers in southeastern Michigan. DTE Electric is regulated by various federal and state governmental agencies, including, the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC), the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ).
Electricity is generated from the company's fossil-fuel plants, a hydroelectric pumped storage plant, a nuclear plant and the company's wind and other renewable assets, and is purchased from electricity generators, suppliers and wholesalers. The electricity, which the company produces and purchase is sold to three major classes of customers: residential, commercial and industrial, throughout southeastern Michigan. DTE Electric owns 11,084 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity. In addition, DTE Electric owns and operates 690 distribution substations with a capacity of approximately 35.5 million kilovolt-amperes (kVA) and approximately 438,000 line transformers with a capacity of approximately 31.4 million kVA.
In FY2016, the Electric segment reported revenues of $5,225 million, which accounted for 49.2% of the company's total revenue.
DTE's Energy Trading segment focuses on physical and financial power and gas marketing and trading, structured transactions, enhancement of returns from its asset portfolio and optimization of contracted natural gas pipeline transportation, and storage positions. Energy trading also provides natural gas, power, and related services which may include the management of associated storage and transportation contracts on the customers’ behalf and the supply or purchase of renewable energy credits to various customers. The segment’s customer base is predominantly utilities, local distribution companies, pipelines, producers and generators, and other marketing and trading companies.
In FY2016, the Energy Trading segment reported revenues of $2,575 million, which accounted for 24.2% of the company's total revenue.
The company's Power and Industrial Projects segment is comprised primarily of projects that deliver energy and utility-type products and services to industrial, commercial and institutional customers, produce reduced emissions fuel and sell electricity from renewable energy projects. This business segment provides services using project assets usually located on or near the customer’s premises in the steel, automotive, pulp and paper, airport, and other industries.
In FY2016, the Power and Industrial Project segment reported revenues of $1,906 million, which accounted for 17.9% of the company's total revenue.
DTE's Gas segment consists principally of DTE Gas, which is a natural gas utility engaged in the purchase, storage, transportation, distribution and sale of natural gas to approximately 1.3 million residential, commercial and industrial customers throughout Michigan and the sale of storage and transportation capacity. The company owns distribution, storage and transportation properties that are located in the State of Michigan. DTE Gas is directly connected to interstate pipelines, providing access to most of the major natural gas supply producing regions in the Gulf Coast, Mid-Continent, and Canadian regions.
DTE's distribution system includes approximately 19,000 miles of distribution mains, approximately 1.1 million service pipelines and approximately 1.3 million active meters. The company owns approximately 2,000 miles of transmission pipelines that deliver natural gas to the distribution districts and interconnect the company's storage fields with the sources of supply and the market areas. The company owns storage properties relating to four underground natural gas storage fields with an aggregate working gas storage capacity of approximately 139 billion cubic feet (Bcf).
In FY2016, the Gas segment reported revenues of $1,324 million, which accounted for 12.5% of the company's total revenue.
The company's Gas Storage and Pipelines segment controls natural gas storage fields, intrastate lateral and intrastate gathering pipeline systems, and has ownership interests in interstate pipelines serving the Midwest, Ontario, and Northeast markets. In addition, DTE Energy owns a 50% interest in the NEXUS Pipeline, a proposed 255-mile pipeline to transport Utica and Marcellus shale gas to Ohio, Michigan and Ontario market centers.
In FY2016, the Gas Storage and Pipelines segment reported revenues of $302 million, which accounted for 2.8% of the company's total revenue.
DTE's Corporate and Other segment includes various holding company activities, holds certain non-utility debt and energy-related investments. In FY2016, the Corporate and Other segment reported revenues of $2 million, which accounted for 0.0% of the company's total revenue.
