DPL, Inc. (DPL or 'the company') is a public utility and regional electric energy company principally operating through its subsidiary: The Dayton Power and Light Company (DP&L). The company primarily operates in West Central Ohio and Illinois regions of the US.

DPL operates through single business segment: utility. The utility segment is comprised of DP&L's electric generation, transmission and distribution businesses which generate electricity to residential, commercial, industrial and governmental customers. DP&L generates electricity at five coal-fired electric generating stations and distributes electricity to more than 517,000 retail customers who are located in a 6,000 square mile area of West Central Ohio. DP&L also sells electricity to DPL Energy Resources (DPLER, which was sold in January 2016) and any excess energy and capacity is sold into the wholesale market.

DPL's present summer generating capacity, including peaking units, is 3,066 megawatts (MW). Out of the total, 2,078 MW is derived from coal-fired steam generating stations and the balance of 988 MW consists of combustion turbines, diesel peaking units and solar. DP&L's present summer generating capacity, including peaking units, is 2,510 MW. Around 2,078 MW of this capacity is derived from coal-fired steam generating stations and the balance of 432 MW consists of combustion turbines, diesel peaking units and solar. Moreover, 100% of DP&L's existing steam generating capacity is provided by generating units owned as tenants in common with Dynegy and AEP Generation. Additionally, DP&L, Duke Energy and AEP Generation own 880 circuit miles of 345,000-volt transmission lines. Further, DP&L has several interconnections with other companies for the purchase, sale and interchange of electricity.

During FY2015, DPL sold a total of 14,738 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity to 516,708 customers and DP&L sold a total of 16,424 million kWh of electricity to 516,708 customers; and DPLER sold a total of 5,928 million kWh of electricity to 124,866 customers.

DPL's other significant subsidiaries include DPL Energy (DPLE) and Miami Valley Insurance Company (MVIC). DPLE is engaged in the operation of peaking generating facilities and selling of power in wholesale markets; whereas MVIC is DPL's captive insurance company that provides insurance to DPL and its subsidiaries. DPL also has a wholly-owned business trust, DPL Capital Trust II, which is formed for the purpose of issuing trust capital securities to investors.
