Domtar Corporation (Domtar) is engaged in manufacturing and marketing of uncoated freesheet paper. The company also manufactures paper grade, fluff and specialty pulp. The company designs, and distributes a wide range of fiber based paper products to a variety of customers, including merchants, retail outlets, publishers, stationers, printers, converters and end-users. The company owns and operates Domtar Distribution Group, a network of paper distribution facilities. It also produces lumber and other specialty and industrial wood products.
The company conducts its business operations through two reportable segments, namely, Pulp and Paper, and Personal Care.
Domtar's Pulp and Paper segment focuses on the design, manufacturing, marketing and distribution of communication papers, specialty and packaging papers, softwood, fluff and hardwood market pulp.
The company’s pulp products are comprised of softwood, fluff and hardwood kraft. These grades are sold to customers in over 40 countries worldwide. The company’s pulp is used in a variety of end products, such as diapers and personal hygiene products, bathroom and facial tissue, specialty and packaging papers, customers who make printing and writing grades, building products and electrical insulating papers. Domtar sell market pulp to customers in North America mainly through a North American sales force while sales to most overseas customers are made directly or through commission agents.
Under the paper business, uncoated freesheet papers are categorized into communication and specialty and packaging papers. Communication papers are further categorized into business and commercial printing and publishing papers.
The business papers include copy and electronic imaging papers, which are used with inkjet and laser printers, photocopiers and plain-paper fax machines, as well as computer papers, preprinted forms and digital papers. These products are primarily for office and home use. The commercial printing and publishing papers include uncoated freesheet papers, such as offset papers and opaques. These uncoated freesheet grades are used in sheet and roll fed offset presses across the spectrum of commercial printing end-uses, including digital printing. Domtar’s publishing papers include tradebook and lightweight uncoated papers used primarily in book publishing applications such as textbooks, dictionaries, catalogs, magazines, hard cover novels and financial documents. These products also include base papers that are converted into finished products, such as envelopes, tablets, business forms and data processing/computer forms. In addition, the company produce paper for several specialty and packaging markets. These products consist primarily of thermal printing, flexible packaging, food packaging, medical packaging, medical gowns and drapes, sandpaper backing, carbonless printing, labels and other coating and laminating applications. Moreover, the company manufacture papers for industrial and specialty applications including carrier papers, treated papers, security papers and specialized printing and converting applications.
The company has 16 paper and pulp mills, with yearly paper production capacity of approximately three million tons of uncoated freesheet paper. The company produce approximately 4.1 million metric tons of softwood, fluff and hardwood pulp at 12 of its 13 mills. In addition, the company produces market pulp in excess of its internal requirements at the company’s pulp and paper mills in Ashdown, Espanola, Hawesville, Windsor, Marlboro and Nekoosa. The company also produce papergrade, fluff and specialty pulps at its three stand-alone pulp mills in Kamloops, Dryden and Plymouth. Domtar can sell approximately 1.9 million metric tons of pulp per year depending on market conditions.
In FY2016, the Pulp and Paper segment reported revenues of $4,181 million, which accounted for 82% of the company's total revenue.
The company’s Personal Care segment focuses on the design, manufacturing, marketing and distribution of absorbent hygiene products, including both adult incontinence and infant diaper products. The segment’s products include branded and private label briefs, protective underwear, underpads, pads and washcloths, as well as baby diapers, youth pants and infant training pants. It offers its products under the brand names Attends, Reassure, Indasec, and IncoPack. The company supplies adult incontinence products in North America and Europe. The segment operates six manufacturing facilities.
In FY2016, the Personal Care segment reported revenues of $917 million, which accounted for 18% of the company's total revenue.
The company operates its products under various brands namely Cougar, Lynx Opaque Ultra, Husky Opaque Offset, First Choice, EarthChoice, Attends, NovaThin, NovaZorb, IncoPack, Indasec, Reassure and Ariva.
Geographically, the company classifies its operations into five segments, namely the US, Canada, Europe, Asia and Other Foreign Countries. In FY2016, the US segment accounted for 70% of the company's total revenues, followed by Canada with 9.7%; Europe with 11.9%; Asia with 6.9% and Other Foreign Countries with 1.5%.
