DIRECTV, Inc. (Directv or "the company") is engaged in acquiring, promoting, selling and distributing digital entertainment programming primarily via satellite to residential and commercial subscribers. Additionally, the company owns and operates two regional sports networks (RSNs), and has interests in ROOT SPORTS Northwest and Game Show Network. Directv primarily operates in the US, Brazil, Mexico and other countries in Latin America.
The company operates through three reportable business segments: DIRECTV U.S.; DIRECTV Latin America; and sports networks, elimination and other.
DIRECTV U.S. comprises the operations of DIRECTV Holdings LLC and its subsidiaries. The segment provides direct-to-home (DTH) digital television services and multi-channel video programming distribution (MVPD) services in the US. The company provides subscribers with access to hundreds of channels of digital video entertainment and audio programming that it transmits directly to subscribers' homes or businesses through high-powered geosynchronous satellites. In addition, the company provides video-on-demand (VOD) service under the brand name DIRECTV CINEMA, which offers a selection of approximately 12,000 movie and television programs to its broadband-connected subscribers, through digital video recorders (DVRs) as well as through broadband to the subscribers with set-top connection to their broadband service. Through directv.com the company's subscribers have access to over 21,000 movie and television programs.
The company's MVPD services include 195 national high-definition (HD) television channels. DIRECTV US also provides premium professional and collegiate sports programming such as the NFL SUNDAY TICKET package which allows the subscribers to view the selection of NFL games. As on December 31, 2014, DIRECTV US served approximately 20.4 million subscribers.
DIRECTV Latin America is a provider of DTH digital television services throughout Latin America. DIRECTV Latin America is comprised of: PanAmericana, which provides services in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and certain other countries in the region; and Sky Brasil, which is a 93% owned subsidiary. DIRECTV Latin America also includes the company's 41% equity method investment in Sky Mexico. As on December 31, 2014, PanAmericana had approximately 6.8 million subscribers, and Sky Brasil had approximately 5.2 million subscribers. Including Sky Mexico, DIRECTV and SKY provides service to nearly 19 million subscribers throughout the region. During the same period, the company provided services to 26% of pay television households in PanAmericana, 30% of pay television households in Brazil and 39% of pay television households in Mexico. In addition, the company has spectrum holdings that cover 50 million households across Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Peru.
The company's sports networks include the operations of DIRECTV Sports Networks and its subsidiaries. DIRECTV Sports Networks includes the company's RSNs which provide programming to local professional sports teams and college sporting events and locally produce their own programming. The company owns two wholly owned regional sports networks based in Denver, Colorado and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and two other regional sports networks based in Seattle, Washington and Houston, Texas which operate under the brand name ROOT SPORTS.
