Daimler AG (Daimler or ‘the company’) manufacturers a range of cars, trucks, vans and buses. The company also offers a choice of tailored automotive services and automotive financial services, including financing, leasing, insurance, and fleet management. The company operates through five business segments: Mercedes-Benz Cars, Daimler Trucks, Daimler Financial Services, Mercedes-Benz Vans, and Daimler Buses.
The Mercedes-Benz Cars segment offers a broad spectrum of premium automobiles under the Mercedes-Benz brand and its Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes- Maybach luxury brands. The vehicles range from the compact models of the A-Class and B-Class to various sport utility vehicles (SUVs), roadsters, coupes and convertibles and the S-Class luxury sedans. Additional products offered by the segment are the high-quality small cars of the smart brand. In FY2016, the segment produced 2,235,352 vehicles and sold 2,197,956 vehicles worldwide. In FY2016, the Mercedes-Benz Cars segment reported revenues of E85,785 million, which accounted for 56% of the company's total revenue.
The Daimler Trucks Segment product range includes light, medium and heavy trucks for local and long-distance deliveries and construction sites. The segment also offers special vehicles used for municipal applications. It manufactures and sells trucks and specialty vehicles under the brand names of Mercedes-Benz, Freightliner, Western Star, FUSO, and BharatBenz. The segment also offers buses under the Thomas Built Buses and FUSO brands. Daimler trucks segment operates 26 production facilities out of which 14 are in NAFTA region, seven in Europe, three in Asia, and two in South America. In addition, the company has a joint venture in China called Beijing Foton Daimler Automotive (BFDA) which produces trucks under the Auman brand. In FY2016, the segment produced 411,265 trucks and sold 415,108 trucks worldwide. In FY2016, the Daimler Trucks segment reported revenues of E31,719 million, which accounted for 20.7% of the company's total revenue.
The Daimler Financial Services segment supports the sales of the Daimler Group’s automotive brands in more than 40 countries. Its product portfolio primarily consists of tailored financing and leasing packages for customers and dealers, but also insurance brokering, fleet management services, investment products and credit cards, as well as various mobility services, such as the ‘moovel’ mobility platform, the ’mytaxi‘ app and the flexible car2go mobility concept. The main areas of the division’s activities are Western Europe and North America, and increasingly China as well. Daimler Financial Services also holds a 45% interest in the Toll Collect consortium, which operates an electronic road-charging system for trucks on highways in Germany. During FY2016, financial services segment’s contract volume of E132.6 billion covers more than 4.3 million vehicles. In FY2016, the Daimler Financial Services segment reported revenues of E19,358 million, which accounted for 12.6% of the company's total revenue.
The Mercedes-Benz Vans segment designs, manufactures, and sells medium and large vans under the brand names Sprinter, Vito and Citan series. The segment has production facilities in nine locations, including Germany, Spain, the US, Argentina, as well as in China through a joint venture Fujian Benz Automotive and in France through a strategic alliance with Renault-Nissan. In addition, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Classic is produced under license by GAZ and YaMZ in Russia. During FY2016, the segment produced 368,574 vehicles and sold 359,096 vehicles. In FY2016, the Mercedes-Benz Vans segment reported revenues of E12,298 million, which accounted for 8% of the company's total revenue.
The Daimler Buses segment primarily sells completely built buses in Europe under Mercedes-Benz and Setra brand names. In addition, the segment’s product range comprises city and intercity buses, coaches and bus chassis. The Daimler buses segment operates 14 production sites which are located in Germany, France, Spain, Turkey, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and India. During FY2016, this segment produced 26,180 vehicles and sold 26,226 vehicles. In FY2016, the Daimler Buses segment reported revenues of E4,101 million, which accounted for 2.7% of the company's total revenue.
Geographically, the company classifies its operations into seven segments, namely the US, Germany, China, Europe, Asia, NAFTA and Other Markets. In FY2016, the US accounted for 25.6% of the company's total revenues, followed by Germany with 15.3%; China with 10.4%; Europe with 26%; Asia with 12.8%; NAFTA with 3.7% and Other Markets with 6.1%.
