Continental Resources, Inc. (Continental) is a crude oil and natural gas company. It is engaged in the business of acquisition, exploration, and production of hydrocarbon. All the properties owned by the company are spread across various parts of the US with approximately 50% of its proved reserves are in North Region. The company operates its exploration activities in large new or developing crude oil and liquids-rich natural gas plays that enable the company to acquire undeveloped acreage positions for future drilling operations. As of December 31, 2016, the company's estimated proved reserves were 1,274.8 million Barrels of Oil Equivalent (MMBoe) of which developed reserves were 519 MMBoe. This is equivalent to 643.2 million barrels (MMBbls) of crude oil and 3,789.8 million cubic feet (MMcf) of natural gas. In FY2016, production averaged 216,912 barrel of oil equivalent (Boe) per day. Continental holds properties in the North, South, and East regions of the US. The North region consists of properties north of Kansas and west of the Mississippi River and principal producing properties are in the Bakken field and the Red River units, while the producing properties in South region are located in the SOOP and STACK areas of Oklahoma. The Bakken field of North Dakota and Montana is one of the premier crude oil resource plays in the US. Production and reserve growth in the Bakken field during 2016 came primarily from its activities in North Dakota. Production in North Dakota recorded an average rate of 104,524 Boe per day during the fourth quarter of 2016. In FY2016, the company completed 192 gross (38 net) wells. During FY2016, the total proved Bakken field reserves were 591.9 MMBoe, accounting for 46% of the total proved reserves of the company. The Red River units are comprised of nine units located along the Cedar Creek Anticline in North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana that produce crude oil and natural gas from the Red River B formation. The principal producing properties in the Red River units include the Cedar Hills units in North Dakota and Montana, the Medicine Pole Hills units in North Dakota, and the Buffalo Red River units in South Dakota. The company’s properties in the Red River units comprise a portion of the Cedar Hills field. Proved reserves in the Red River regiontotaled 36.8 MMBoe as of December 31, 2016, accounting for only 3.1% of the total proved reserves. The South region includes Kansas and all properties south of Kansas and west of the Mississippi River including various plays in the South Central Oklahoma Oil Province (SCOOP), Sooner Trend Anadarko Canadian Kingfisher (STACK), Northwest Cana, and Arkoma areas of Oklahoma. The SCOOP play currently extends approximately 120 miles across Garvin, Grady, Stephens, Carter, McClain and Love counties in Oklahoma. At the end of FY2016, the company controlled approximately 617,700 gross (345,700 net) acres of leasehold position in SCOOP and completed 72 gross (28 net) wells. As of December 31, 2016, proved reserves in the area were 471.9 MMBoe, accounting for 37% of the total proved reserves. STACK area of the company includes the properties of the company in Blaine, Dewey, and customer counties in Oklahoma. In FY2016, the company held a total of 196,200 net acres under lease in STACK and completed a combined 26 gross (10 net) wells in the area. As of December 31, 2061, the proved reserves in the area totaled 161.2 MMBoe, accounting for 13% of the total proved reserves. The East region is comprised of undeveloped leasehold acreage east of the Mississippi River with no current drilling or production operations.
