CONSOL Energy Inc. (CONSOL or 'the company') is a US-based diversified company. It is involved in oil and gas exploration and production (E&P) and coal mining. CONSOL conducts its operations through various subsidiaries and affiliates in the US. CONSOL consists of two principal business divisions: Pennsylvania (PA) Mining Operations and Exploration and Production (E&P). In FY2016, CONSOL produced 394.4 billion cubic feet equivalent (Bcfe) of natural gas and liquids. The Pennsylvania (PA) Mining Operations division are mining, preparation and marketing of thermal coal, sold primarily to power generators. It also includes selling, general and administrative activities, as well as various other activities assigned to the PA Mining Operations division. During FY2016, the E&P segment had total estimated proved reserves of 6,252 Bcfe of natural gas including estimated net proved reserves of 3,137.3 Bcfe in Marcellus Shale region, net proved reserves of 1,371.9 Bcfe in Utica Shale region, net proved reserves of 1,254.6 Bcfe of CBM and 487.7 Bcfe from other gas division. In addition, the segment operated a total on 12,876 producing wells including oil and gob wells. The principal activities of the coal segment are mining, preparation and marketing of thermal coal sold primarily to power generators; and metallurgical coal sold to metal and coke producers. The coal segment includes two reportable divisions: Pennsylvania (PA) operations and Virginia (VA) operations. Each of these reportable divisions includes a number of operating segments. The PA operations coal division's principal activities are mining, preparation and marketing of thermal coal to power generators. During FY2016, the PA operations aggregated segment included the mines of Bailey, Enlow Fork, and Harvey Mines and the corresponding preparation plant facilities. The VA operations coal division's principal activities are mining, preparation and marketing of low metallurgical coal to metal and coke producers. In FY2016, the VA operations aggregated segment included the Buchanan Mine and the corresponding preparation plant facilities. Also, the other coal division operations include, Miller Creek Complex, coal terminal operations, the company's purchased coal activities, idled mine activities and general and administrative activities, as well as various other activities assigned to the coal segment but not allocated to each individual mine. For the FY2016, the company produced a total of 24.6 million tons of coal from continuing operations and held 2.4 billion tons of proven and probable coal reserves. In FY2016, the Pennsylvania (Pa) Mining Operations division reported revenues of $1,065.6 million, which accounted for 57.3% of the company's total revenue. The Exploration and Production (E&P) division includes four reportable segments to produce pipeline quality natural gas for sale primarily to gas wholesalers. The E&P division's reportable segments operates, develops and explores for natural gas primarily in Appalachia region (Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Virginia and Tennessee). The E&P division has four reportable segments including: Marcellus Shale, Utica Shale, Coalbed Methane (CBM), and Other Gas. In the Marcellus Shale, the company has the rights to extract natural gas in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio from approximately 413,000 net Marcellus Shale acres at the end of FY2016. In the Utica Shale, the company rights to extract natural gas in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio from approximately 683,000 net Utica Shale acres at December 31, 2016. The company has the rights to extract Coalbed Methane (CBM) in Virginia from approximately 268,000 net CBM acres, which cover a portion of the coal reserves in Central Appalachia. Additionally, the company has right to extract CBM in West Virginia, southwestern Pennsylvania, and Ohio from approximately 912,000 net CBM acres. In central Pennsylvania, the company has the right to extract CBM from approximately 260,000 net CBM acres. Moreover, the company controls 584,000 net CBM acres in Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee. CONSOL also has the right to extract CBM on 139,000 net acres in the San Juan Basin in New Mexico. The Other Gas segment is primarily related to shallow oil and gas production and the Chattanooga Shale in Tennessee, neither of which are significant to the company. This segment also includes purchased gas activity, unrealized gain or loss on commodity derivative instruments, exploration and production related other costs, other corporate expenses and miscellaneous operational activity not assigned to a specific E&P segment. In FY2016, the Exploration and Production (E&P) division reported revenues of $793.2 million, which accounted for 42.7% of the company's total revenue. Geographically, the company classifies its operations into five segments, namely the US, Canada, Asia, Europe, and South America. In FY2016, the US segment accounted for 90.9% of the company's total revenues, followed by Canada with 0.3%; Asia with 5.5%; Europe with 2.1%; and South America with 1.3%.
