BAE Systems plc  is a contractor and systems integrator for the global defense and aerospace market. The company delivers a wide range of products and services for air, land and naval forces. BAE Systems also provides advanced electronics, security, information technology solutions and support services for clients globally. Its clients include the defense departments of the US, the UK, Australia, and Saudi Arabia. BAE Systems operates through five reportable segments: platforms and services (the UK); platforms and services (international); platforms and services (the US); electronic systems; and cyber and intelligence.

The company's platforms and services (the UK) segment includes the UK-based air, maritime and combat vehicle activities, and certain shared services activities. The segment's military air and information activities includes programs for the production of Typhoon combat and Hawk trainer aircraft, F-35 Lightning II fuselage and empennage manufacture. The segment also supports the development of next-generation unmanned air systems and defense information systems, such as the Falcon secure deployable communication system.

The segment's maritime programs include the manufacture of two Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers, three River Class Offshore Patrol Vessels and seven Astute Class submarines for the Royal Navy, the design of the Successor submarine and Type 26 frigate, and in-service support. In addition, the segment's combat vehicles provide upgrades and support to the British Army and international customers. The segment's munitions business focuses on the design, development and manufacture of a comprehensive range of products, servicing its main customer, the UK Ministry of Defense, as well as international customers.

The business is the principal supplier of munitions to the British armed forces. As of December 31, 2016, the platforms and services (the UK) segment contributed revenue of GBP7,806 million or 39.7% of the company’s total revenue. BAE Systems' platforms and services (international) segment includes the company's businesses in Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Oman. In Saudi Arabia, the company provides operational capability support to the country's air and naval forces on UK/Saudi government-to-government contracts.

In Australia, the company delivers production, upgrade and support programs for the Australian government across the air, maritime and land domains. The segment's platforms contracts include naval ships, such as the Landing Helicopter Dock program for the Navy. The segment also has a 37.5% shareholding in MBDA, which develops and manufactures guided weapons. As of December 31, 2016, the platforms and services (international) segment contributed revenue of GBP3,943 million or 20% of the company’s total revenue.

The company’s platforms and services (the US) segment produces combat vehicles, weapons and munitions, and delivers the US-based services and sustainment activities, including ship repair and the management of government-owned munitions facilities. The segment's US combat vehicles division focuses on the tracked, wheeled and amphibious vehicle markets, servicing both the US and international customers. The segment's weapons systems and munition operations focuses naval weapons, artillery, advanced weapons, precision munitions, high explosives and propellants for the US, the UK and international customers. BAE Systems Hagglunds focuses on the tracked vehicle market for Swedish and international customers.

FNSS, BAE Systems' Turkish joint venture, produces and upgrades tracked and wheeled military vehicles for international customers. The segment's US Ship Repair and Modernisation is a major provider of non-nuclear ship repair, modernisation, overhaul and conversions to the US Navy, government and commercial maritime customers. It has operations in seven US shipyards on the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and Pacific coasts, as well as in Hawaii. As of December 31, 2016, the platforms and services (the US) segment contributed revenue of GBP2,874 million or 14.6% of the company’s total revenue. BAE Systems' electronic systems segment comprises the US and UK-based electronics activities, including electronic warfare systems and electro-optical sensors, military and commercial digital engine and flight controls, next-generation military communications systems and data links, persistent surveillance capabilities, and hybrid electric drive systems.

The segment offers a range of solutions for electronic combat, survivability and targeting, communications and control, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), commercial aircraft electronics and HybriDrive propulsion. The segment's electronic combat solutions combine the electronic protection, electronic warfare and electronic attack product lines to provide capabilities in integrated electromagnetic systems for airborne applications. The segment's survivability and targeting solutions includes situational awareness, targeting and survivability systems, such as electro-optic sensor products, guidance systems, handheld targeting and infrared countermeasures systems for soldiers and vehicles.

The segment's communications and control capabilities use radio frequency communication and data links to provide military aircraft controls and displays, together with platform integration capabilities. The segment's ISR solutions address the market for airborne persistent surveillance, identification systems, signals intelligence and space products. The segment also offers commercial aircraft solutions which address the commercial aircraft electronics market. In addition, the segment's HybriDrive propulsion delivers power and energy management solutions, including vehicle hybrid drive systems.

As of December 31, 2016, the electronic systems segment reported GBP3,282 million or 16.7% of the company’s total revenue. BAE Systems' cyber and intelligence segment comprises government focused intelligence-based services and government and commercial cyber security activities. The segment includes intelligence and security, global analysis and operations, geospatial intelligence (GEOINT)-ISR, IT solutions and applied intelligence. The segment's intelligence and security business delivers a broad range of services, including systems development, IT, cyber operations and intelligence analysis to enable the US military and government to recognize, manage and defeat threats.

The segment's global analysis and operations provides mission-enabled analytic solutions and support to operations across the homeland security, law enforcement, defense, intelligence and counter-intelligence communities. GEOINT-ISR develops and supports software systems and mission applications for geospatial tasking for the US defense and intelligence communities. IT solutions develops, deploys and maintains mission applications focused on information sharing, knowledge management and enhanced enterprise mission IT solutions for federal, civilian and defense intelligence customers.

Applied intelligence (formerly BAE Systems Detica) collects, manages and exploits information to enable government and commercial clients to reveal intelligence, maintain security, optimize performance and manage risk. As of December 31, 2016, the cyber and intelligence segment contributed revenue of GBP1,778 million or 9% of the company’s total revenue. The company classifies its geographic operations into nine regions: the UK, Rest of Europe, the US, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Rest of the Middle East, Australia, Rest of Asia and Pacific and Africa and Central and South America. As of December 31, 2016, the US region accounted for 39% of the company’s total revenue, followed by the UK with 21.7%, Saudi Arabia with 21.4%, Rest of Europe with 9.2%, rest of Middle East with 3.9%, Australia with 3%, Rest of Asia and Pacific with 0.9%, Canada with 0.5%, and Africa and Central and South America with 0.3%.
